Hamed Tukur, a PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle and recipient of the prestigious UKRI-BBSRC PhD Scholarship, has developed a digital solution aimed at addressing key challenges in bioscience education.

Hamed Tukur’s academic journey began at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where he graduated with first-class honors. While his undergraduate experience provided a solid theoretical background, he quickly recognized the limited access to laboratory resources, highlighting a significant issue faced by students in many African institutions. This disparity in access became the catalyst for Tukur’s entrepreneurial venture.
Introducing BioSim Lab
To bridge this gap, Tukur founded BioSim Lab, a cutting-edge, browser-based virtual molecular biology laboratory. This platform allows students to engage in realistic, hands-on exercises without the associated costs and risks of traditional laboratory settings. By utilizing devices that many learners already own, such as smartphones and laptops, BioSim Lab makes advanced molecular biology techniques accessible to a broader audience, eliminating the need for expensive infrastructure.

BioSim Lab has gained international recognition, most notably from Nanyang Biologics, a biotech company based in Singapore.
