Trump Orders Pentagon to Prepare for Potential Action in Nigeria
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has instructed the Pentagon to prepare for potential military action in response to the ongoing violence against Christians in Nigeria. This decision comes amid heightened concerns over the treatment of religious minorities in the region.
In a social media post, Trump warned that if the Nigerian government fails to address the rampant killings of Christians, the United States might halt aid to Nigeria and take aggressive action against the Islamic terrorists responsible for these atrocities. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging Nigeria’s leaders to act swiftly.
Trump further stated that any military response would be rapid and formidable, mimicking the brutality with which the terrorists attack Christians. He issued a stark warning, suggesting that the Nigerian government must take immediate steps to protect its citizens.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed Trump’s directive, expressing clear support for the president’s stance. He stated that the “killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria and everywhere must stop immediately,” implying that the United States would take decisive measures if necessary.
NBC News has sought comments from the Nigerian embassy regarding these developments. In response, Nigeria’s presidential spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, reiterated the country’s openness to U.S. assistance in combating Islamic militants, provided it respects Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Bwala expressed optimism that a forthcoming meeting between Trump and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would yield productive outcomes in the fight against terrorism. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to address the growing threat of violent extremism.
This announcement follows Trump’s recent classification of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” a designation applied to nations perceived to exhibit serious violations of religious freedom. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu contested this label, arguing that it does not accurately reflect Nigeria’s reality and asserting that religious tolerance is fundamental to the nation’s identity.
The Nigerian government responded by emphasizing its commitment to combating violent extremism while celebrating the country’s diversity as a strength. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Nigeria’s adherence to international norms and values regarding faith, tolerance, and inclusivity.
It’s important to note that Trump had previously designated Nigeria a country of particular concern during his first term; however, the Biden administration rescinded this classification in 2021 after determining that the country no longer met the criteria for inclusion on this list.
