Arteta Encourages Calm Amid Challenging Times for Arsenal
Manager Mikel Arteta has called on his Arsenal players to maintain composure as they prepare to face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday. The Gunners are eager to regain their footing following a series of disappointing performances that have raised concerns about their ability to secure silverware this season.
Arsenal has faced back-to-back defeats, including a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, followed by an upset elimination from the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Southampton. Such setbacks have placed additional pressure on the team as they aim for their first Champions League title.
Despite the recent losses, Arsenal currently holds a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League, fueling their aspirations to end a 22-year wait for a UEFA Champions League victory. Arteta emphasized the importance of staying focused and analyzing their recent struggles rather than succumbing to panic. He stated, “It’s about understanding why it happened and bringing clarity. If we analyze that and accept it, we’ll be better.”
Arteta also urged his squad to gain perspective on their progress this season. “Feel that pain, feel that emotion, and use it to improve,” he said. Having reviewed the past games, he asserted that while the team did not deserve to lose, the nature of football often results in punitive outcomes for lapses in their identity and performance.
With renewed determination, Arteta expressed his players’ eagerness for the upcoming match against Sporting Lisbon. “We’re more hungry than ever for tomorrow’s game,” he remarked, highlighting the motivation within the squad despite recent setbacks.
Looking ahead to the match, Arteta confirmed that Gabriel Magalhães, Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard are fit to play against Sporting. However, Bukayo Saka and Julian Timber will remain in London to prepare for Saturday’s league match against Bournemouth. In an unusual training session prior to their departure, players engaged in unique drills emphasizing teamwork and focus.
When questioned about the inventive training methods, Arteta noted the importance of incorporating different elements to reinforce the team’s commitments and strategies. “Training sessions have to reflect our messages and the commitments we have made to each other,” he explained, indicating his focus on building unity within the squad.
Meanwhile, Victor Gokeres returns to his former club after a significant transfer to Arsenal worth €63 million ($74 million). Not only does Gokeres arrive at Arsenal following a standout performance leading Sweden to the World Cup final, but his history with Sporting makes his return a notable event. Arteta expressed confidence that Gokeres will channel his past experiences positively in this high-stakes encounter.
As Gokeres prepares for this crucial match, the former Sporting player has expressed gratitude for his time at the club. Arteta acknowledged the emotional weight of such a return, stating that Gokeres carries the memories of his journey and is now focused on achieving success in the Champions League with Arsenal.
