Remembering a Life of Humility and Integrity
Sir P.O. El Habor, a devoted father, passed away eight years ago at the impressive age of 93. His life lessons remain etched in the hearts of his loved ones. On the night of his passing, he continued to pray to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, embodying a deep spirituality that shaped his character. To those of us who believe, his serene expression at the time of death suggested he was gently taken to his eternal home.
A Commitment to Faith and Service
Renowned for his humility, our father practiced a life free of discrimination based on gender, social class, or education. He was dedicated to serving both God and his community, becoming actively involved in the Church Harvest Committee at the Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Benin. His moral convictions often led him to confront others about the misuse of church funds, causing friction with those who exploited these resources for personal gain.
Consistency in Devotion
No matter the weather, he was unfailingly present at early morning Mass. His commitment extended to a variety of church groups, including the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Lay Readers’ Association. Additionally, Dad was honored as a Knight of the Order of St. Mulumba, a testament to his dedication to his faith and community.
A Lifelong Love of Learning
Dad had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Even when his eyesight began to fail, he sought help to continue reading. He voraciously consumed literature from various religious backgrounds and classics like “Pride and Prejudice” and “David Copperfield.” His interests also included biographies of influential figures, shedding light on the diverse world he admired.
Health Consciousness and Rigor
Health was a priority for him; he maintained an active lifestyle with regular walks and avoided alcohol. He managed a carefully organized collection of medications, akin to a mini-pharmacy, that he used responsibly. When not fasting, he preferred a diet rich in fruits like bananas and oranges, promoting both physical and spiritual well-being.
The Love of Family
Our father was deeply devoted to his family. Despite occasional disagreements with our mother, he always supported her, particularly in her role as the church president. He encouraged us to contribute generously to the church and took meticulous notes of our finances during charitable endeavors. His integrity as a public servant at the Nigeria Railway Corporation was well known, as he emphasized diligence, punctuality, and ethical standards in all professional interactions.
Legacy of Leadership
In his later years, Dad became the revered head of our extended family, known affectionately as “Okaegbe.” He provided loving guidance while remaining steadfast in his Christian beliefs, rejecting any traditional idolatry. His capacity for forgiveness and his ecumenical spirit left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He found wisdom in the teachings of both Catholic and Protestant preachers, enriching his spiritual journey with diverse perspectives.
A Lasting Influence on Generations
Eight years have passed since his departure, yet his influence resonates deeply within me. His unwavering faith, steadfast moral compass, and loving character have shaped who I am today. Beyond my Creator, I have no doubt that my father has been the most significant influence in my life. He rests peacefully now, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and integrity that we strive to uphold.
