Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone opened a press conference on Tuesday, expressing heartfelt appreciation for Antoine Griezmann, who is set to play his final match for the club before joining Orlando City SC at the end of the season. This emotional moment came ahead of the upcoming Champions League fixture against Barcelona.
Sitting alongside Griezmann, Simeone invited the French forward to share a few words before the media session commenced, catching him by surprise.
Diego Simeone’s Tribute to Antoine Griezmann
“I wanted to take this opportunity to speak not only from a coach’s standpoint but also as an Atlético fan,” Simeone began, reflecting on Griezmann’s significant contributions to the club. “Thank you for your hard work and humility. You are an admirable figure in a society where young people need role models like you. Your impact is immeasurable.”
He continued, expressing gratitude for the bond they share. “I appreciate our friendship and the way you have distinguished our professional relationship. I see you primarily as a player and then as a friend. With eight league matches, one cup game, and, hopefully, five more Champions League matches ahead, there is still much to achieve.”
Adding a light-hearted note, Simeone remarked, “I encourage you to keep having fun. I care about you a lot, but if you don’t run tomorrow, you’ll lose!”
Griezmann, visibly touched by Simeone’s words, responded with gratitude, promising to return the favor during his next family gathering. When asked about his record as Atletico Madrid’s all-time top scorer, Griezmann acknowledged the importance of their relationship.
Simeone Reflects on Griezmann’s Legacy
Simeone addressed a question regarding whether Griezmann was the best player he has ever coached, stating, “We are fortunate to have had such a remarkable talent at our club. He started his career playing wide, but there were challenges in his initial months. I envisioned him in a more central role, which demands exceptional mental energy. Since then, he has consistently been our top scorer. Yes, he is undoubtedly one of the best players I’ve worked with.”
As for his upcoming move to Major League Soccer, Griezmann indicated that his current focus remains on competing against Barcelona rather than reflecting on his future. “I’ve been dedicated to understanding what ‘Cholo’ (Simeone) expects from me,” Griezmann said. “It’s not the right time to discuss Orlando or what lies ahead.”
With the quarter-finals on the horizon, Griezmann expressed his anticipation for the high-level competition. “There is a significant challenge ahead, and I am mentally prepared to contribute in any way I can.”
