ICAN Aviation Branch Launches Endowment Fund to Advance Financial Initiatives
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Aviation Branch is set to establish a N500 million endowment fund to ensure sustainable financing for its initiatives. This fund is designed not only to support branch operations but also to enhance training, research, and professional development within the aviation sector.
A portion of the endowment will be strategically invested to create revenue streams that can help fund a permanent office and knowledge center. This facility will feature both digital and physical library resources, aimed at cultivating the next generation of professionals in aviation finance.
Reflecting on a Year of Growth and Challenges
The announcement of these plans coincided with the branch’s first anniversary, a milestone that Pioneer President Ayodele Olatiregun characterized as both challenging and rewarding. He reaffirmed the branch’s dedication to bolstering financial governance in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Formally launched on April 22, 2025, the ICAN Aviation Branch serves as a hub for Chartered Accountants engaging with the Nigerian aviation ecosystem. Olatiregun noted that membership has grown from an initial count of 137, reflecting an increasing interest among financial professionals in aviation.
Building a Collaborative Network within the Aviation Sector
Members of the branch represent a diverse array of key aviation institutions, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority, and various commercial airlines and travel agencies. Olatiregun elaborated that this chapter aligns with ICAN’s evolving structure, encouraging industry-specific groups that facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
Traditionally, ICAN operated through regional associations, but the introduction of industry-focused branches allows professionals to address specific challenges inherent in their fields. The aviation chapter aims to promote excellence in aviation finance and enhance accountability across the sector.
Outreach Programs and Community Engagement
Despite facing the typical hurdles associated with establishing a new chapter, including fund mobilization and member engagement, Olatiregun credited the collective efforts of management and members for laying a strong foundation in a short period. The chapter has also initiated community outreach programs, introducing secondary school students to career opportunities in accounting and aviation finance through guidance and educational materials.
Members have organized technical sessions to enhance skills and knowledge among their ranks. To celebrate its first anniversary, a week of activities from April 16 to April 22 is planned, kicking off with a health-focused road walk and wellness session.
Anniversary Celebrations and Professional Development Opportunities
The week-long celebrations will include an inter-school debate on April 17, engaging students in discussions about the aviation sector’s contributions to national development. Taking place at the Air Force Base Hall in Ikeja, Lagos, this event will be followed by Jumat prayers.
Members can look forward to an interactive sports competition on April 18 at the MMA School, aimed at fostering camaraderie among attendees. The following day will feature a Thanksgiving service at the Catholic Church of the Assumption.
Highlighting Continuous Professional Development and Future Goals
The chapter’s outreach efforts will gain momentum on April 20 with courtesy visits to leading aviation agencies such as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigerian Air Force. Additionally, a virtual webinar offering five MCPD credit hours is scheduled for April 21, providing a platform for professional development through digital means.
The culmination of the celebrations will be a gala night and fundraising event for the endowment fund on April 22 at the Adeyemi Bello Auditorium. This event will also feature a discussion centered on the theme “Digital Transformation, Professional Excellence and Financial Governance in Nigeria’s Aviation Industry.” Olatiregun emphasized the significance of this theme, highlighting the pivotal role of digitalization and governance in the finance of government-operated sectors like aviation.
A Vision for the Future of Nigeria’s Aviation Finance
As the chapter celebrates its first anniversary, Olatiregun expressed his belief that this initiative will position the aviation sector as a model of financial discipline and collaboration between government and private stakeholders. He aims to enhance the financial management of Nigeria’s aviation industry, ultimately creating a legacy that inspires similar collaborations across other sectors.
