NUPENG Set to Elect New Leadership as Current President Steps Down
The Nigeria Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Union is preparing for a significant leadership transition as Mr. Salimon Akanni Oladiti is slated to be elected its new president on April 24. This change comes as the term of the current president, Mr. Williams Akporeha, approaches its conclusion.
Retirement Announcement at Quarterly Meeting
Mr. Akporeha made his retirement announcement during the quarterly National Executive Council meeting of the NUPENG Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch, held in Warri, Delta State, over the weekend. His decision marks the start of a new chapter for the union.
Oladiti’s Expected Election Marks a Historic First
With a strong background in union leadership, Mr. Oladiti, a former national chairman of the PTD branch and currently serving as a national councilor, is well-positioned to take the helm during the elections in Lagos. His ascension would be a historic milestone, making him the first leader from the PTD branch to serve as president of NUPENG.
Unanimous Support for Oladiti from PTD Leadership
At the recent meeting, Joseph Okafor, the Zonal Chairman of the PTD-NUPENG in the Port Harcourt Zone, proposed a motion for the unanimous endorsement of Mr. Oladiti’s candidacy, which was supported by Mr. Adekunle Akinlaya from the Lagos Zone. This strong endorsement reflects the confidence in Oladiti’s leadership capabilities.
Akporeha’s Gratitude and a Call for Continued Support
Mr. Akporeha took the opportunity to express deep gratitude towards the PTD members for their unwavering support throughout his eight-year term. He recalled, “Eight years ago, you stood by my side, and in difficult times, you overcame all challenges.” His remarks emphasized the importance of unity and gratitude within the union.
A Vision for a Stronger Union
In his closing remarks, Akporeha urged members to extend their support to both Mr. Oladiti and the newly elected PTD branch national chairman, Mr. Mathias Oteh. He emphasized the necessity for sustained collaboration to foster growth and stability within the union. “I want to see a stronger union than when I left,” he declared, indicating his commitment to the organization’s future.
Promises of Purposeful Leadership from New Chair
In his inaugural address, Mr. Oteh expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and committed to providing purposeful leadership. He acknowledged the presence of many capable individuals within the union but expressed his dedicated intention to lead effectively over the next four years. “I will spare nothing to offer what I have: good leadership,” he affirmed.
Support from Industry Leaders
Also addressing the gathering, Alhaji Lawal Yusuf Osman, Chairman of the Road Transport Owners Association of Nigeria, commended NUPENG for facilitating a peaceful transition. He reiterated his commitment to continue supporting the union during this pivotal period. Osman’s remarks underscore the broader industry support for NUPENG during this transition.
