Governor Aiyedatiwa Targets Crime in Ondo Communities
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, visited the communities of Imafon, Igusin, and Irad in the Akure North Local Government Area on Tuesday, reaffirming his commitment to eradicating criminal behavior and restoring security in these troubled regions. His visit follows a disturbing series of violent incidents that have put local residents on edge.
Residents protested last Saturday in response to a surge in violent assaults and killings that left at least two individuals dead and several others injured. The governor’s visit aimed to assure the community that their safety is a priority for his administration.
During a condolence visit to the palace of Olumafon, King Oba Samuel Adegbehimbe Aliu, Aiyedatiwa expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the recent victims. He highlighted the alarming nature of these crimes, specifically mentioning the tragic killing of a female farmer and her daughter as well as the shooting of a young man who resisted abduction in Irad. He emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated in the state.
While acknowledging that insecurity is a pressing national concern, Aiyedatiwa committed to enhancing protective measures for lives and property throughout Ondo State. He revealed that local law enforcement agencies, including the police, military, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, are collaborating with local hunters and vigilante groups to secure forested areas and support vulnerable communities.
The governor reported that more than 100 suspects linked to kidnapping have already been apprehended, emphasizing ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks that operate in remote areas. As part of these efforts, Aiyedatiwa announced the establishment of Amotekun security posts in affected neighborhoods to improve surveillance and decrease response times to incidents.
Additionally, the governor pointed out that several youths from the affected communities have been detained on suspicion of involvement in criminal activities. He reassured residents that lawful and organized interventions will persist to ensure their safety.
In his remarks, Oba Aliu praised the governor’s proactive measures, particularly the ongoing road construction, which he believes will enhance security operations. However, he voiced concerns regarding the lack of firearms for vigilante groups, which he argues hampers their efficacy, and noted the slow response times of some security personnel.
Echoing similar sentiments, Oba Kayode Ajomale of Ojogbariaka, Irad State, called for the improvement of security infrastructure, particularly highlighting the inadequacy of police coverage in the area. He pointed out that the expansive region between Familugba and Zone 4, covering approximately 182 kilometers, is served by only a single police station that is several kilometers away.
State Police Commissioner Adeboyere Lawal condemned the recent attacks and assured the community that security forces are well-acquainted with the local terrain. He added that efforts are underway to increase personnel and enhance operations in the underbrush to bolster community safety.
