Arsenal Advances to Champions League Semi-Finals with Draw Against Sporting CP
Arsenal secured their spot in the Champions League semi-finals with a goalless draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium. Mikel Arteta’s team entered the second leg on Wednesday with a slight advantage from a 1-0 victory, courtesy of Kai Havertz’s goal scored in Lisbon the previous week.
Despite Sporting’s Genny Katamo hitting the post in the first half, Havertz’s earlier goal ultimately proved sufficient for Arsenal to progress to the last four, where they will face Atletico Madrid.

Statistically, Arsenal had the edge going into Wednesday’s match, as Sporting had not won in their last ten outings in England and had a similarly poor record in away knockout matches at European tournaments since 1970.
Though Arsenal celebrated their advancement to the semi-finals for a second consecutive year, their performance offered little intimidation ahead of a critical Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday.
Arteta had called for a strong reaction following his side’s previous disappointing defeat to Bournemouth. However, despite a promising start, Arsenal struggled to sustain their momentum, allowing Sporting to gain confidence.
A misplaced pass by William Saliba almost set up a chance for Francisco Trincão, whose shot went wide of the target. Arsenal sought a goal to relieve mounting pressure but faced another scare when Pedro Gonçalves nearly capitalized on a short pass from David Raya, though the mistake went unpunished. Katamo’s volley rattled Raya’s far post, highlighting Sporting’s growing confidence as the first half drew to a close.
Arsenal appeared disorganized at the start of the second half, and although Maxi Araujo’s curling effort forced Raya to react, it ultimately veered wide. Ebele Eze attempted a long-range shot, but Arsenal still seemed to lack the creative spark needed to break the deadlock. In an effort to inject life into the match, 16-year-old Max Dauman was brought on, even as concerns loomed over Madueke’s exit due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, Araujo was brought down in the box, resulting in penalty appeals from Sporting that were dismissed by referee François Letexier. As Arsenal fans clamored for more action, an increasingly frustrated Arteta was seen conversing with the officials on the sidelines. Dauman began to make an impact, with a corner that was nearly converted by Leandro Trossard hitting the post.
Ultimately, the match proved to be a straightforward endeavor for Arsenal, who are now focused on reaching the Champions League final for the first time since 2006 against Atletico Madrid, the team that earlier defeated them 4-0 in a group stage match at the Emirates in October. With an eye on league success, Arteta’s squad will quickly refocus for the upcoming match against Manchester City.
