Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike Out for the Season with Major Injury
Liverpool FC has confirmed that striker Hugo Ekitike has sustained a significant Achilles injury, sidelining him for the remainder of the season and preventing him from participating in the upcoming World Cup with the French national team.
The injury occurred during the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, where Ekitike slipped while on the pitch. Subsequent medical assessments revealed that he had ruptured his Achilles tendon, prompting an immediate substitution.
Medical experts are concerned that the 23-year-old could face a recovery period of at least six months, with some evaluations suggesting it may extend to nine months. A more detailed analysis will be necessary to finalize his rehabilitation timeline.
“Ekitike will be unavailable for the remainder of the club season, and he will also miss this summer’s World Cup with the French national team,” Liverpool stated in an official release on Thursday.
France’s national head coach Didier Deschamps expressed his disappointment over Ekitike’s injury. He highlighted the forward’s recent integration into the national team, stating, “This injury is a blow not only for him but also for the French team.” Deschamps emphasized his belief that Ekitike will eventually return to peak form and offered his support to both the player and coaching staff.
Ekitike’s injury comes at a challenging time for Liverpool, particularly as Alexander Isak returned to the squad from his own serious foot injury. Isak, the club’s British record transfer, made his first start since fracturing his ankle last December.
Since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million last summer, Ekitike has impressed, netting 19 goals for both Liverpool and the French national team this season. However, his absence enhances the strain on an already beleaguered squad.
Injury Woes Compound Liverpool’s Challenges
Peter Smith from Sky Sports noted that Ekitike’s unfortunate setback adds to a growing list of injuries that have marred Liverpool’s season. The club had high hopes for a potent attacking trio consisting of Isak, Ekitike, and fellow summer signing Florian Wirtz, collectively valued at £320 million. However, Ekitike’s injury against PSG has limited the opportunities for this lineup to gel.
Smith mentioned that the plans initially featured these three players playing significant minutes together, but their time on the pitch has been interrupted. “Before Tuesday, we had played around 88 minutes with Florian, Alex, and Hugo. Now, we added about 27 minutes to that,” he commented, acknowledging the impact of Ekitike’s injury on team dynamics.
Moreover, Liverpool has faced numerous injury challenges this season. First-choice goalkeeper Alisson is also sidelined with a hamstring issue, while Conor Bradley recently underwent knee surgery. The defensive line has been affected by the anterior cruciate ligament injury to Giovanni Leoni, with additional absences including Jeremy Frimpong and Wataru Endo.
Despite claiming improved fitness status leading up to the PSG match, the team’s setbacks continue to hinder their performance and depth as they push later into the season.
