Nasarawa State Governor Calls for Innovative Leadership
Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule expressed his concerns on Wednesday about political office holders who tout basic responsibilities, such as paying salaries and building roads, as significant achievements. He emphasized that true leadership should be defined by its ability to provide impactful, innovative solutions to pressing issues.

During his address at the 59th inaugural lecture of Nasarawa State University in Keffi, Sule reflected on the essential nature of governance, urging leaders to transcend traditional methods to effectively address the needs of their constituents. His remarks come at a time when citizens are increasingly demanding tangible improvements in their living conditions and scrutinizing local governance more closely.
Leadership Beyond Basic Responsibilities
“Projects that fail to make a direct impact on the lives of citizens hold little value,” Sule stated. He expressed frustration at governors who claim achievements for simply fulfilling their duties, such as paying salaries and developing infrastructure. “Being elected to serve means that these tasks should be seen as the baseline, not accomplishments.”

He emphasized the importance of thinking outside the box to provide unexpected benefits that genuinely improve people’s lives. Sule noted, “Service is defined by innovative solutions that positively impact the community,” challenging his peers to embrace creativity in their governance strategies.

The governor highlighted his administration’s proactive measures to tackle recurring issues, such as the rebuilding of fire-prone markets. Instead of offering financial assistance that often proved ineffective, his government opted to construct modern markets. This initiative has successfully resulted in a significant reduction in fire incidents.
Infrastructure Improvements and Flood Control
Sule discussed the successful implementation of flood control measures in Outta, a locality near Keffi. He attributed the project’s success to increased internal revenue, which facilitated the construction of a bridge designed to mitigate flooding in the area, showcasing the positive outcomes of strategic financial management.

Dr. Ike Neriaku, Director of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, applauded Sule’s development initiatives, especially the ongoing infrastructure projects across key corridors in the state. Meanwhile, NIPR Deputy Director Professor Emmanuel Dandaura cautioned that poor coordination in communication and performance could erode public trust in governance. He stressed the importance of accountability and the need for institutions to prioritize stakeholder engagement in order to uphold credibility.
