The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that two individuals lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in an explosion at a petrol station in the Daffo area of Bokkos Local Government Area. The incident occurred during ongoing repair work on an underground storage tank at Natti Petroleum Investment Nigeria Ltd.
Police Clarify Nature of the Incident
In a statement issued on Saturday, police spokesperson SP Alfred Arabo addressed the public’s concerns, clarifying that the explosion was inaccurately reported online as a bomb attack. He emphasized that it was, in fact, an industrial accident. “The Plateau State Police Command has noted the dissemination of false and misleading reports alleging a bombing and crisis in Plateau State,” the statement read, characterizing these claims as “completely false” and a misrepresentation of the unfortunate event.
Immediate Response to the Emergency
Upon learning of the explosion, the Commissioner of Police instructed divisional officers to mobilize a team and respond swiftly to the scene. The police confirmed that the situation was brought under control and rescue operations were initiated immediately. Injured victims were promptly evacuated to Bokkos Cottage Hospital, while the deceased were transported to the mortuary.
Investigation Launches Regarding the Cause
In a precautionary measure, the command has dispatched an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to investigate the cause of the explosion. The command stated, “Our investigation has revealed that this incident was completely coincidental and unrelated to any terrorist activity or improvised explosive device.” This assurance aims to alleviate any public fears surrounding the nature of the incident.
Victims Identified
The police have confirmed the identities of the victims, including 24-year-old Emmanuel Mapac, who was among those killed in the explosion. Three individuals are currently receiving treatment for their injuries, and the authorities continue to monitor their conditions.
