APC Tensions Rise as Dapo Abiodun Gains Endorsement for 2027 Senate Race
Tensions are escalating within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State following the denial of former governor and current senator for Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, access to the APC Ogun East caucus on Monday. The meeting took place at the Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu Ode and was convened by party leaders amid emerging divisions as the 2027 political elections approach.
A video that surfaced online featured Daniel addressing his supporters from a campaign bus branded with the OGD/PBAT Movement after being barred from the venue. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the exclusion rendered any decisions made at the meeting “null and void.”
The senator’s exclusion has reignited concerns about factional disputes within the Ogun State APC, particularly in the Ogun East district, where political allegiances are increasingly uncertain.
In contrast, shortly after Daniel’s exclusion, APC leaders and stakeholders from Ogun East rallied to unanimously endorse Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the upcoming 2027 Senate election. This endorsement was announced during a well-attended rally at the same Adeola Odutola Hall, highlighting a broad coalition of party leaders and grassroots representatives from across the senatorial district.
The event drew a significant crowd, comprising members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), both current and former local government chairpersons, and state and national legislators. Youth and women leaders were also present, showcasing the extensive support Abiodun has garnered from various community sectors.
Addressing the attendees, former Ogun East Senator Lekan Mustapha emphasized the collective confidence in Governor Abiodun’s capabilities to effectively represent the district in the Senate. He announced that the party leaders would formally relay their endorsement to the governor, including a commitment to sponsor his nomination papers for the 2027 elections.
Mustapha characterized Abiodun as a leader of exceptional character and intelligence, asserting that the coalition is prepared to rally support to confirm his status as the consensus candidate. State government secretary Tokunbo Talabi added that Abiodun’s proven governance record and ability to foster party unity make him a worthy candidate for the Senate.
In statements reaffirming their support, House of Representatives member Femi Ogunbanwo lauded the governor’s administration for fostering peace and development throughout the state. He expressed confidence in the prospect of further enhancing democratic benefits for Ogun East on a national level.
Gathering substantial backing, the event included all 103 members of the Ogun East constituency, youth leaders, and key grassroots activists. Prominent figures in attendance featured former senators like Gbenga Kaka and Lekan Mustapha, as well as Ogun East APC Chairman Adedoyin Adeleke and respected party elders. The presence of various politicians and campaigners underscored the widespread support for the governor’s anticipated bid for the Senate.
