Federal Intervention Urged to Stabilize Agriculture Sector
The House of Representatives has called for immediate federal action to stabilize food prices and protect farmers from significant economic losses stemming from a sharp decline in agricultural prices across Nigeria.
Motion Highlights the Importance of Agriculture
This resolution comes on the heels of a motion introduced by John Johnson and discussed during a plenary session led by Mr. Bamidele Salam, who represents Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in Osun State. In his remarks, Mr. Salam stressed agriculture’s critical role in Nigeria’s economy, underscoring its contribution to employment, rural income, and national food security.
Concerns Over Plummeting Agricultural Prices
However, he raised alarms about a troubling and sustained decline in agricultural prices nationwide, impacting staple crops like cassava, rice, and yam. “The continuous downward trend poses a severe economic challenge for farmers who have made substantial investments through loans and personal savings,” Salam noted.
Investments at Risk Due to Price Drops
He elaborated on the significant resources that farmers invest in seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, labor, and transportation. Many of these costs are incurred through credit facilities, and as a result, farmers are experiencing substantial financial losses. The decline in prices jeopardizes their ability to sustain operations and recover their investments.
Structural Inefficiencies Exacerbate the Situation
Mr. Salam attributed the crisis to structural inefficiencies within agricultural value chains, particularly during the post-harvest stage. Inadequate storage infrastructure, weak market coordination, and the absence of reliable off-take arrangements severely limit farmers’ options. Lawmakers have pointed out that these inadequacies force farmers to hurriedly sell their crops at discounted rates to avoid spoilage, further compounding their economic challenges.
Potential Consequences of Inaction
The House of Representatives warned that without urgent intervention, the country risks undermining agricultural investments, lowering productivity, and intensifying rural economic hardship. “If this trend continues unchecked, many farmers may cease production, which would severely impact food security and provoke inflation,” legislators cautioned.
A Call for Comprehensive Solutions
Responding to the situation, MPs unanimously urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, along with relevant agencies, to devise immediate corrective measures. These should include structured take-back programs and price support mechanisms to shield farmers from market volatility. There are also calls for enhancing storage facilities, strengthening strategic grain reserves, and building agricultural processing hubs to minimize post-harvest losses and stabilize market prices.
Mandate for Further Investigation
Additionally, lawmakers have tasked the House Agricultural Production and Services Committee with investigating the underlying causes of the ongoing decline in farmgate prices. They are expected to deliver a comprehensive report within two weeks for further legislative review. This urgent response underscores the persistent imbalances in Nigeria’s food system, where urban consumers grapple with high prices while farmers in producing areas struggle to sell their goods at sustainable rates, largely due to oversupply and inadequate infrastructure.
