Nigerian National Petroleum Company Enhances Cooperation with Sonatrach
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Ltd) has formalized a partnership with Algeria’s national oil company, Sonatrach, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering collaboration in research, development, and innovation within the oil and gas sector.
The agreement, announced by NNPC on Wednesday, was executed through its Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) department, in conjunction with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF).
The MoU was signed by Sophia Mbakwe, the Executive Vice President of Business Services at NNPC, and Hoja Mohammed, Managing Director of Sonatrach. This partnership lays the groundwork for structured collaboration focused on exchanging technology and research insights between the two companies.
Signing Ceremony Highlights Collaborative Efforts
The signing ceremony took place during the inaugural session of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) Research and Development Directors Forum at the PTDF Tower in Abuja. This event convened leaders in research and development from APPO member countries to explore shared industry challenges and opportunities.
Heineken Lokpovili, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, represented by former APPO Secretary-General Omar Ibrahim, highlighted the forum as one of four strategic initiatives developed by APPO to meet the challenges posed by the global energy transition. He underscored the forum’s focus on technology and expertise as pivotal in navigating this transition.
Strategic Initiatives to Address Energy Challenges
Lokpovili outlined additional initiatives, including the proposed African Energy Bank aimed at tackling funding constraints and the Central African Pipeline System designed to enhance regional market integration. These initiatives exemplify APPO’s commitment to fostering collaboration among its member states.
Bashir Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, represented by Chief Financial Officer Adedapo Segun, emphasized the integral role of research and development in shaping the future of Africa’s oil and gas landscape. He advocated for research centers to act as catalysts for industrial competitiveness, warning that while innovation may entail costs, the repercussions of technological stagnation could be far more detrimental.
Unified Strategic Framework for African Producers
Ojulari also called for a cohesive strategic framework among African oil producers, emphasizing the need for resource pooling, data integration, and risk-sharing. He highlighted the significance of adopting digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence and advanced engineering, to enhance operational efficiency across upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors.
Farid Ghezali, Secretary-General of APPO, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of aligning research efforts with Africa’s unique needs to generate practical, impactful solutions. He stated the necessity for the research to benefit the continent directly.
Partnerships for Decarbonization and Sustainability
Shuaib Aliyu, Secretary-General of PTDF, addressed the critical role of partnerships in advancing environmental sustainability and decarbonization initiatives across APPO member states. Rasheed Ojulari, Chief Innovation Officer of NNPC’s RTI Division and Chairman-Elect of the APPO R&D Directors Forum, articulated the forum’s focus on prioritizing joint programs in upstream optimization, artificial intelligence, decarbonization, and industrial systems development.
