The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced revised dates for its presidential and gubernatorial primaries, with the presidential primary now set for May 25 and the gubernatorial primary on May 23, taking place two days earlier than previously planned.

In a recent directive, President Bola Tinubu emphasized to the 31 governors of the APC the importance of adhering to electoral laws to ensure free, fair, and harmonious primaries across the country. This message was part of the president’s efforts to foster unity within the party as it navigates the upcoming elections.
Discussions on Strengthening the Party
Following a closed-door meeting with the president in Abuja, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago addressed the media. They reported that their discussions revolved around strategies to create a more unified party while preparing for the primaries.
Presidential Support for Flexible Primary Methods
Governor Abdulrazaq, who also serves as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, acknowledged the president’s commitment to empowering state-level governance. He noted that Mr. Tinubu supported the option for states to choose between consensus and direct primaries as permitted by election law.
Emphasis on Fairness and Party Strength
Echoing Abdulrazaq’s sentiments, Governor Bago highlighted the president’s unwavering support in guiding the primaries forward. He assured that internal discussions were aimed at promoting a process free of hostilities, which he believes will further fortify the party as it heads into the elections.
Attendance of Key Party Leaders at the Meeting
The meeting saw participation from over 18 governors, including prominent figures such as Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Babagana Zulum (Borno), and multiple others. Notably, some states were represented by their lieutenant governors, showcasing a broad consensus among party leaders.
Party Communicates Changes to Electoral Body
Following the National Working Committee meeting, APC National Public Relations Deputy Secretary Durosinmi Meseko confirmed that the party had communicated the updated primary dates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He provided a timeline for the sale of nomination forms, which will commence on April 25 and conclude on May 2. The submission of completed forms is scheduled for May 4, with a vetting process for candidates set for May 6 to May 8.
Detailed Election Timeline Ahead
Meseko provided further details, revealing that the selection day for presidential candidates will occur on May 9, followed by the announcement of results for various positions on May 11. The timelines for appeals and other primaries were also disclosed, ensuring transparency and compliance with electoral procedures. Notably, the Senate primary is slated for May 18, while the House of Representatives and gubernatorial primaries will be held on May 20 and May 21, respectively.
