Former Michigan Football Coach’s Scandal Unveiled
Disgraced former University of Michigan football coach Sherone Moore revealed in a recent interview that he had a long-term relationship with the girlfriend of a subordinate, which had become an open secret within the athletic department. This admission surfaced amidst a scandal that has significantly impacted the Wolverines football program.
Details of the Relationship Emerge
Paige Shiver, 32, spoke publicly for the first time about her relationship with Moore, which began in 2022 when they were both interns. At that time, Moore, who was a married offensive coordinator, later transitioned to head coach in early 2024. Upon this promotion, Shiver became his executive assistant.
Reflections on Love and Control
While Shiver expressed what she believed to be love during that period, she has since reassessed her feelings. She stated, “Looking back, I realize that what I experienced was not true love.” However, she noted that Moore exerted substantial pressure on her to continue their relationship, even when she sought to end it.
Concerns About Career and Safety
Shiver described feeling trapped, stating that Moore and the other coaches held complete control over her career prospects, which left her apprehensive about potential repercussions if she tried to leave the relationship. “He could fire me at any moment,” she noted, adding that whenever she attempted to distance herself, Moore would manipulate her emotions, claiming he couldn’t function without her.
Pregnancy Complications and Termination
During their time together, Shiver became pregnant with Moore’s child. However, she faced significant health risks due to a diagnosis of Pompe disease, a serious condition that weakens muscles. Shiver disclosed that multiple medical experts advised against continuing the pregnancy, leading to her decision to terminate. She recounted Moore’s response: “You have to do what’s right for your body.”
Outcry for Change within University Culture
Now distanced from the University of Michigan, Shiver has chosen to speak out to protect other young women from facing similar circumstances, emphasizing the campus-wide awareness of her relationship with Moore that went largely unaddressed by authorities. Shiver stated, “While he controlled my life, the university did nothing.”
Legal Representation and Institutional Accountability
Andrew Stross, Shiver’s attorney, underscored the systemic failures within the university, describing the relationship as an “open secret” and emphasizing the hostile environment at Schembechler Hall. He criticized the university for prioritizing athletic success over the safety and well-being of individuals like Shiver, calling for accountability from university leadership.
University’s Response and Consequences for Moore
In response to these allegations, the University of Michigan asserted that it acted promptly upon learning of the relationship, terminating Shiver once the matter was disclosed in December. The university affirmed its commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful workplace, stating, “His conduct violated university policy.” Meanwhile, Moore’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.
