Nottingham Forest made significant strides towards Premier League safety with a commanding 5-0 victory over Sunderland on Friday. This win follows closely on the heels of a 4-1 triumph against Burnley, allowing Forest to create an eight-point buffer from the relegation zone and heightening tensions among Tottenham Hotspur supporters, who have fallen to third place, trailing West Ham by two points.
With Burnley and Wolverhampton already relegated, Spurs and West Ham appear most likely to join them in the lower tier next season. Forest’s New Zealand striker, Chris Wood, emphasized the impact of their recent performances, saying, “It gives us some breathing room and puts pressure on the two guys behind us.” He noted that a winning streak could solidify their position.
“We’ve been building on the second half of last week,” Wood continued. “That’s what we wanted to do. We aim to improve and showcase our capabilities. We started strong, and what we achieved today was fantastic.”
Forest’s head coach, Vitor Pereira, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but reminded them that more points are necessary to ensure their survival in the Premier League. “Great, great,” Pereira stated. “The Premier League is our Champions League, so I asked the team to play at Champions League level.”
Pereira also commended the tactical execution of his players, particularly in the first half, where they generated considerable pressure and converted several set pieces into goals. “To defeat Sunderland in their stadium, which is ten points above us, required us to perform at the highest level,” he explained. “We were consistent defensively, kept a clean sheet, and that is crucial for us right now.”
Despite having the league’s second-best home defense behind Manchester City and Arsenal, Sunderland’s backline faltered during a troubling first half. Forest showcased superior speed and determination from the outset, taking the lead just 16 minutes in with a header from Igor Jesus following a well-executed short corner.
Goalkeeper Robin Roofs inadvertently gifted Forest their second goal with a careless pass that allowed Morgan Gibbs-White to assist Chris Wood, leading to his first league goal in several months after a significant injury layoff. Just minutes later, Gibbs-White set up Jesus with an exquisite header, contributing to Forest’s growing lead with a low shot that netted their third goal. Three minutes after this, Jesus added his second, marking Forest’s fourth goal of the match.
While Sunderland’s Dan Ballard had a goal disallowed after a second-half video review, it was not enough to overshadow their performance. Elliott Anderson’s stoppage-time goal further sealed Sunderland’s fate, resulting in their most significant defeat at the Stadium of Light. Reflecting on the match, Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka expressed disappointment: “It’s hard to explain right after the game. I can only apologize to the fans. We let in an easy goal today. The manager warned us that even a one percent drop in effort could lead to punishment, and we paid the price at home.”
