Hotels Unite for Earth Hour Initiative
As the global community gears up for this year’s Earth Hour, Sheraton Abuja Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton Lagos, and Le Méridien Ogei Place are set to participate in this significant environmental awareness event, initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007. The collaboration aims to spotlight the urgent challenges posed by climate change.
Powerful Message Through Collective Action
These hotels will join millions across the globe to turn off their lights for one hour starting at 8:30 PM (local time) today, sending a compelling message about the need for environmental consciousness and proactive measures. At Sheraton Abuja Hotel, staff will engage guests with informational boards promoting energy-saving tips throughout the hotel’s food and beverage outlets and employee areas.
Engaging Guests in Sustainability Efforts
Hotel management plans to inform guests of ways they can participate through various channels. Initiatives include posting notices in elevators, sending guest letters, and turning off marquee lights at key locations such as the pool bar and Obudu Grill House Restaurant. Staff will also track energy savings by reading the meter at the end of the hour, providing transparency about the event’s impact, according to Nan Gi Thiem.
Commitment to Organic and Local Produce
In line with its sustainability ethos, Sheraton Abuja Hotel will offer a menu featuring locally sourced and organic options like vegetable kebabs with barbecue. Employees will also experience a workforce area adorned with sustainable décor, complemented by an eco-friendly tree-planting event scheduled for later in the day.
Community Clean-up and Guest Participation
Four Points by Sheraton Lagos will engage in community clean-up and tree-planting initiatives, encouraging employees to volunteer a minimum of two hours for these activities. The hotel will also invite guests to take part in climate action by adjusting their indoor lighting during the hour.
Illuminating Earth Hour Celebrations
Le Méridien Ogei Place will also participate by turning off its lights for the designated hour. The hotel’s observance will include disabling outdoor signage lights, dimming unnecessary indoor lighting, and utilizing candlelight in dining areas. Guests will receive messages via in-room voicemail and television outlining the observance of Earth Hour.
Special Evening Events and Fundraising Efforts
During the evening at Four Points Lagos, visitors will enjoy complimentary cocktails and finger foods in the lobby, while Le Méridien Ogei Place will feature a candlelit display showcasing the Earth Hour 60+ symbol. Sheraton Abuja Hotel, Four Points Lagos, and Le Méridien Ogei Place will also participate in Marriott International’s WWF fundraiser, pledging to donate US$1 for every tweet about their Earth Hour activities.
Dennis Naguib, Vice President of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity, expressed pride in supporting such a vital movement. He emphasized that Earth Hour exemplifies a year-long commitment to environmental responsibility and the significant role businesses play in combatting climate change.
