Government Challenges Regulatory Bodies on Governance and Agricultural Development
Mr. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) Board of Directors to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance. He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency, encouraging collaboration with management and stakeholders while ensuring regulatory independence.
Akume also called on the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) Board to extend its initiatives to additional states, leverage technology more effectively, and create greater opportunities for youth and women in the agricultural sector. His remarks came on Tuesday during separate inauguration ceremonies for the NUPRC and NALDA boards in Abuja, which he described as significant milestones in enhancing the federal government’s governance framework and fostering inclusive national development.
During the NUPRC Board inauguration, Akume highlighted its importance in implementing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), designed to reshape Nigeria’s oil industry through improved regulatory clarity, institutional independence, and adherence to global best practices. The establishment of this board reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to managing Nigeria’s upstream petroleum resources transparently and efficiently, thereby serving the interests of the Nigerian populace.
The SGF indicated that the NUPRC Board, as the Commission’s highest governance entity, is tasked with providing essential strategic oversight, policy direction, and institutional stability. This approach is aimed at boosting investor confidence, maximizing revenue generation, and ensuring the sustainable development of the upstream sector.
Akume reinforced that the selection of board members was made with a focus on proven capabilities, integrity, and professional expertise. He expressed confidence that their collective experience would bolster the Board and advance the goals set by the PIA. He emphasized that integrity and adherence to legal standards must guide all decisions, as public trust and national interests hinge on the Council’s stewardship.
He reiterated that this inauguration is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda, which prioritizes robust institutions, the rule of law, and integrity in public service, all of which are essential for effective regulation of the upstream oil sector and Nigeria’s broader economic landscape.
In a separate ceremony for the NALDA Board, Akume reaffirmed the government’s commitment to agricultural transformation as a vital component of national development. He emphasized NALDA’s role as a strategic tool for poverty reduction, food security, job creation, and rural development. He pointed out recent initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estate, which aims to establish a modern, mechanized agricultural hub.
Akume also referenced complementary programs like the Renewed Hope Restoration Project, targeting stakeholders, the Green Hope Project for climate-smart agriculture, and the Aqua Hope Project focused on enhancing aquaculture productivity. These initiatives are yielding positive results in food production, job creation, and overall economic development, aligning with the government’s vision for economic diversification.
Looking ahead, Akume expects NALDA to broaden its programs, incorporate advanced technology, and create more opportunities for youth and women in agriculture. He emphasized that the Board must provide effective oversight and strategic direction to consolidate NALDA’s achievements and fulfill its mandate.
He urged both councils to approach their roles with patriotism and commitment to national development, assuring them of the government’s continued support in their endeavors. Akume congratulated the Board members and expressed optimism that their leadership would significantly enhance the organization’s effectiveness and contribute to Nigeria’s developmental priorities.
In his response, NUPRC Chairman Senator Magnus Abe shared his gratitude to President Tinubu for his appointment and commended Akume for his role in the selection process. He assured the public of the board’s commitment to fulfilling the objectives of the PIA and emphasized the integrity of the board members as they work towards meeting both government and public expectations.
Senator Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya, Chairman of the NALDA Board, emphasized the responsibility that comes with their appointments, stating their commitment to enhancing agriculture as a foundation for national development. He affirmed their mission to provide strategic direction and uphold governance standards that yield positive outcomes for all Nigerians.
