The Cadillac Championship is generating buzz, with many fans wondering about Rory McIlroy’s absence and which players might shine at Trump Doral. Stay tuned for updates on this marquee event, streamed live on Sky Sports.
Understanding the Cadillac Championship
As the PGA Tour shifts its focus to Trump National Doral in Miami, excitement surrounds the inaugural Cadillac Championship. This prestigious tournament is distinct from the WGC-Cadillac Championship, which took place at the same venue from 2007 to 2016.
In alignment with its goal of enhancing competition, the PGA Tour has decided to establish eight signature events for the season. The Cadillac Championship has been introduced as part of this expansion, where more of the world’s top golfers are expected to participate regularly.
Location and Features of Cadillac Championship
The Cadillac Championship takes place at Trump National Doral’s Blue Monster Course, a renowned 7,500-yard par-72 track. Acquired by Donald Trump in 2012 for approximately $150 million, the resort includes several prominent golf courses, but Blue Monster stands out due to its challenging features, including large water hazards and strategically placed bunkers.
This course has hosted multiple LIV events and is well-known for its ability to challenge even the most skilled players. Marc Leishman once clinched victory at the LIV Golf Miami event here, edging out Charl Schwartzel by a single stroke in 2025.
Why the Name ‘Blue Monster’?
Some might think the moniker ‘Blue Monster’ relates to its water hazards, but the name has deeper roots. Originally known as the Blue Course, it became famous for its size and difficulty, a testament to the challenges it presents to golfers worldwide. Past winner Adam Scott emphasized the course’s formidable nature, noting that wind conditions further complicate the play.
Eligibility Criteria for Cadillac Championship
This week, 72 of the world’s top golfers have been invited to compete in an uncut event, meaning all participants will advance to the weekend, and those finishing at the bottom will still earn a paycheck. Qualification involves being among the top 50 players in the previous year’s FedEx Cup rankings, along with exemptions for select tournament winners from the prior year.
Additionally, top players from the AON Next 10 and AON Swing 5 rankings, as well as those in the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking, will also receive invitations to this signature event.
Who’s Competing This Week?
Rory McIlroy will notably miss the Cadillac Championship as he takes a break following his second Masters title earlier this month. Although McIlroy is absent, the lineup remains impressive, featuring top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who aims to rebound from a recent playoff loss.
Interestingly, Matt Fitzpatrick, who recently won the Zurich Classic alongside his brother Alex, will also be taking a breather. The stakes are high for Alex, who will be making his debut as a PGA Tour member in Miami.
Prize Money for the Championship
The Cadillac Championship boasts a substantial prize pool of $20 million, with the winner set to receive $3.6 million. Meanwhile, second place will earn $2.18 million, and even those finishing at the bottom will leave with $40,200. Importantly, the championship also offers critical FedEx Cup points, with the winner securing 700 points.
