Scott Parker Resigns as Burnley Head Coach Following Relegation
Scott Parker has stepped down as head coach of Burnley, effective immediately, following the team’s relegation to the Championship. The decision comes after discussions between Parker and Burnley chairman Alan Pace, which began after the team’s fate was sealed with a defeat to Manchester City on April 22.
The 45-year-old coach has resigned by mutual consent, with assistant Mike Jackson appointed as the interim head coach for the final four matches of the season. Meanwhile, the club has initiated a search for a permanent replacement.
Parker was appointed nearly two years ago, taking the reins after Vincent Kompany’s departure. Under his management, Burnley achieved remarkable success, including a return to the Premier League with a club-record 100 points. The team maintained an impressive 33-game unbeaten run and recorded a Championship record of 30 clean sheets during that season. However, the squad struggled to replicate that form in the top tier, conceding 68 goals—the most in the league—while managing only four wins in 34 games.
Reflecting on his tenure, Parker expressed his gratitude, stating, “It has been a great privilege to lead this great club over the past two years. I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together and feel now is the right time for both parties to move in different directions.” He emphasized his pride in the memorable 2024-25 promotion season and thanked the club’s ownership, coaching staff, and players for their support. Parker also extended his best wishes to the Burnley fans and the team for the future.
Mike Jackson will make his managerial debut in the upcoming match against Leeds on Friday. Initially taking over after Sean Dyche’s dismissal in April 2022, Jackson managed to secure 10 points from his first four matches but was unable to prevent relegation. With the onset of the 2026-27 season, Burnley prepares for its sixth consecutive year of bouncing between the top two tiers of English football.
A club statement confirmed Parker’s departure, noting that following the confirmation of relegation last week, discussions led to the mutual decision to conclude his time at the club. The statement also thanked Parker for his professionalism and dedication, acknowledging his contributions to Burnley Football Club.
As the club transitions to a new head coach, the focus now shifts to laying the groundwork for the upcoming season, hoping to secure a swift return to the Premier League. The appointment process for Parker’s successor is already underway, reflecting the urgency and ambition of the club’s leadership.
