Iranian Soccer Officials Scheduled to Meet FIFA Before World Cup
GENEVA — Iranian soccer officials are set to hold discussions with FIFA representatives in Zurich regarding the upcoming World Cup matches slated for June in the United States. Mehdi Taj, the head of Iranian soccer, emphasized the importance of the meeting as he returned from Canada, where he missed the FIFA annual general meeting held in Vancouver.
FIFA Extends Invitation to Iranian Delegation
FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafström has extended an invitation to an Iranian delegation to meet at FIFA’s headquarters by May 20. This deadline was shared with The Associated Press by a source familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.
Preparations for the World Cup Tournament
The meeting in Zurich is strategically timed, occurring just three weeks prior to the Iranian team’s arrival in the United States. The squad is expected to train in Tucson, Arizona, in preparation for three group stage matches set to take place in Inglewood, California, and Seattle.
Questions Surround Iran’s Participation in the Tournament
Iran’s status as a soccer powerhouse in Asia has come under scrutiny, particularly following the military offensive launched by the United States and Israel on February 28. The upcoming tournament is co-hosted by Canada and Mexico, further complicating the geopolitical backdrop surrounding Iran’s participation.
FIFA President Reassures Participation
During his keynote address on Thursday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reaffirmed that Iran, the only federation out of 211 not currently facing issues, will participate in the World Cup as scheduled. This statement came amid growing concerns regarding logistical and security challenges for teams, including Iran.
Challenges Faced by the Iranian Delegation in Canada
In addition to these discussions, Taj and two other Iranian officials faced difficulty entering Canada this week en route to the FIFA meeting. Although Taj was not deported, he reported challenges with Canadian authorities, which included inquiries about potential affiliations with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Taj emphasized the diversity of Iran’s population, stating, “In Iran, we are 90 million people.”
Upcoming Matches and League Status
The Iranian national team is scheduled to compete in group matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt from June 15 to 26. The first two games will occur at the Los Angeles Rams’ NFL stadium, while the third will take place at the Seattle Seahawks’ stadium. Should Iran secure a second-place finish in its group, it could potentially face the United States in the Round of 32 at Dallas Cowboys Stadium on July 3. Notably, Iran’s domestic soccer league has been suspended since the onset of the conflict and will not resume prior to the World Cup.
