Nigerian Military Sanctions Personnel for Spreading Misinformation on Troop Supplies
The Nigerian military has taken disciplinary action against members of Operation Hadin Kai for circulating misleading information regarding troop resupply in the northeastern region of the country. This response follows an internal investigation into a viral social media post that raised alarming claims about food shortages among soldiers.
Lieutenant Colonel Sanni Uba, the Media and Information Officer for the North East Joint Task Force, made this announcement on Saturday. He emphasized that the investigation revealed the images shared by military personnel did not accurately depict the amount of food being supplied to the troops.
Uba stated, “The Theater Command Joint Task Force (Northeast), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), has expressed concern over recent social media reports alleging insufficient food provisions for troops in the operational area. After a thorough internal review, it has been established that these images and narratives are misleading and do not reflect the actual feeding arrangements or welfare standards in place for our units in the Northeast Theater.”
He reiterated the commitment to ensuring that troops receive food consistent with approved standards, stating, “These provisions have been consistently implemented and, operational conditions permitting, will be further enhanced during significant periods, such as Salah and Easter, to bolster morale and welfare.”
The established feeding system, according to Uba, is subjected to rigorous oversight through internal mechanisms. He explained that management of food supplies is conducted by a committee comprising personnel from various ranks, led by a senior non-commissioned officer. This structured approach aims to ensure transparency, participation, and continuous supervision over meal planning, preparation, and distribution.
A military spokesperson further clarified that the investigation pinpointed specific instances of misconduct, involving deliberate misrepresentation of the food supplies. “We have determined that the images circulated do not accurately reflect the total food available to the soldiers at that time. Consequently, appropriate disciplinary measures have been enacted in line with the Armed Forces Act of Nigeria,” he said.
The spokesperson underscored the military’s commitment to maintaining discipline and the integrity of its operations. Despite logistical challenges encountered in the North East, military welfare remains a top priority. They encourage personnel to utilize established internal channels for addressing grievances, rather than resorting to actions that may misrepresent operational realities. Uba urged the public to depend on verified information, stressing that the dissemination of misinformation jeopardizes military operations and national security.
