Nigeria’s Minister of Communications to Lead International Telecommunication Union in 2026
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has been appointed as the President of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the year 2026. This announcement was made during the Board of Directors’ first general meeting on April 28 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The news was shared by Isime Esene, the Minister’s Special Assistant for Media and Communication, via a press statement. Esene highlighted the role of the ITU Executive Board as a governing body that supervises the effective execution of programs designed to support policy direction, financial management, global connectivity, digital inclusion, and the governance of emerging technologies.
As digital advancements continue to reshape the global landscape—including developments in artificial intelligence, next-generation networks, and the increasing need for robust digital infrastructure—the 2026 ITU Council convenes during a particularly pivotal moment.
In his capacity as Chair, Dr. Tijani will guide discussions among Member States on critical strategic priorities. These will include enhancing the ITU’s role in empowering nations to harness emerging technologies, expanding stakeholder engagement, and promoting sustainable funding models.
