Dangote Group Aims to Enhance Employment Across Africa
The Dangote Group is poised to significantly expand its operations in Nigeria and throughout Africa, a move that is expected to create numerous employment opportunities. The announcement came from the company’s Corporate Affairs Department, which provided insights during a press briefing in Lokoja.
Job Creation as Operations Expand
Fatima Wali Abdulrahman, the Regional Director and Special Adviser to the President of Dangote Group, highlighted that the company will develop new roles and create jobs as it invests in various strategic business sectors. Currently, Dangote Group stands as Nigeria’s second-largest employer, following the federal government.
Major Expansion Plans in the Oil Sector
During a recent event in Lagos, Aliko Dangote, the CEO and Group President, revealed plans to enhance the Dangote refinery’s capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to a staggering 1.4 million barrels per day. This expansion could potentially generate employment for approximately 95,000 skilled workers at the peak of its construction phase.
Strategic Investment in Nasarawa State
Wali Abdulrahman noted that Nasarawa State is home to the Nasarawa Sugar Company Limited (NSCL), which represents Dangote’s most significant backward integration project in the sugar industry. The completion of this project is expected to usher in a new wave of job opportunities, benefiting both the state and the nation.
Broader Job Creation Vision
According to Abdulrahman, the conglomerate aims to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs through the expansion of key sectors, including oil, fertilizers, cement, agriculture, sugar, and salt. The company’s ambitious Vision 2030 seeks to transition Nigeria and Africa from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven powerhouse.
Support from Local Government
Catherine Bako, the Director-General of the Industrial Investment Department at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, emphasized that the Nasarawa State government, led by Governor Abdullahi Sule, has fostered a supportive environment for private sector investors. She stressed that facilitating ease of doing business remains a critical goal for the administration.
Potential for Mineral Resource Development
Dr. Ahmed Agbo, the Director-General for Trade in the Ministry, pointed out during a panel discussion at the Dangote Special Day event that the state possesses abundant mineral resources that are attractive to prospective investors. He expressed a willingness for the state to collaborate with the Dangote Group to exploit various mineral resources and industrial raw materials.
Vision and Opportunity in Nasarawa
Nidan Sambo Manasseh, the Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI), remarked on Dangote’s Vision 2030, noting its emphasis on expansion and self-sufficiency. He affirmed that Nasarawa State is well-positioned to support this vision, offering a conducive environment for large-scale industries to utilize existing raw materials alongside a burgeoning small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) base. This region presents a unique convergence of vision and opportunity.
