Governor Eno Highlights Enhanced Connectivity Through Airport’s International Status
Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, emphasized that the newly granted international status of the Victor Attah International Airport will significantly improve regional connectivity. The upgrade is expected to eliminate the need for travelers to journey outside Nigeria to reach other West African countries.
First International Flight Marks New Era for the Airport
Governor Eno shared his thoughts with the press on Sunday following his inaugural international flight to Ghana. This momentous development signals a breakthrough for the national aviation facility, which has recently received federal approval to commence international operations after extensive infrastructure enhancements and regulatory compliance.
Historical Significance and Renovations
The Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo was originally established during the tenure of former Governor Victor Attah. Since its inception, the airport has undergone multiple renovations under various administrations, including the launch of Ibom Air in 2019, which has significantly contributed to enhancing the airport’s capabilities.
Boosting Tourism and Regional Benefits
Addressing the importance of international certification, Eno noted that this development will benefit not only Akwa Ibom State but also Nigeria and other nations within the Gulf of Guinea. He remarked, “A functional airport is a prerequisite for successful tourism, and now, through Akwa Ibom, we can access sub-regional countries directly without leaving Nigeria.” This change aims to revitalize the tourism sector within the state.
Ambitions for Akwa Ibom as a Global Destination
Eno shared his vision for Akwa Ibom evolving into a premier destination for global conferences and tourism. He stated, “Akwa Ibom aspires to mirror Kigali, boasting the finest international conference center in the country.” This ambitious goal indicates a commitment to making Uyo a hub for international gatherings.
Strategic Developments and Appointments
Highlighting the potential economic benefits for the Gulf of Guinea region, Eno also announced plans to establish cargo terminals and trade routes aimed at stimulating economic activities. To further support this strategy, he declared the creation of the Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development, appointing Mr. Engur Uwem Ekanem, the Managing Director of Ibom Airport Development Company, to oversee its initial operations.
Celebrating Collaboration and Future Plans
Governor Eno commended President Bola Tinubu for endorsing the airport’s international designation and praised the efforts of Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for ensuring regulatory compliance among aviation stakeholders. Eno also acknowledged the contributions of former governors Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio, and Udom Emmanuel in developing the crucial aviation infrastructure. Looking ahead, he confirmed that Ibom Air intends to expand its fleet to 10 aircraft, with additional Airbuses expected to arrive in June.
Commitment to Training and Development
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to cultivating local talent in the aviation sector, including pilots and engineers. He revealed that the state is sponsoring the training of 20 pilots in Paris and providing additional opportunities for engineers and airport staff. Moreover, significant projects are underway within the aviation ecosystem, including a second runway, apron expansions, and an advanced surveillance system.
Long-Term Vision for Ibom Air and Collective Achievement
Governor Eno emphasized that the recent international flight was more than a ceremonial event; it marked the validation of the airport’s international certification, paving the way for regular international operations. Looking toward the future sustainability of Ibom Air, he mentioned plans to consider privatization and a potential listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He expressed gratitude toward all sectors of government and the aviation industry for their collaborative contributions to this landmark achievement in the state’s history.
