Contentious Debate Highlights Iowa Senate Candidates’ Divergent Views
In a heated televised debate on Tuesday, Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Josh Turek and Zach Walls squared off on key issues including immigration policies, allegations of ties to “dark money” organizations, and their legislative records. This debate marked the first of its kind ahead of the June 2 primary, with another debate scheduled for May 14 at 7 p.m. hosted by KCCI and Gray Television.
Candidate Landscape Ahead of the General Election
Both contenders appear to be gearing up for a general election showdown against U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson. Hinson has emerged as a significant fundraising force since announcing her campaign, especially after Senator Joni Ernst decided not to seek re-election. She has garnered support from various notable Republicans in Washington, D.C., and Iowa.
Challenges in a Republican-Dominated State
Currently, Iowa’s federal delegation is exclusively Republican, and the state Republican Party leads in registered voter numbers. Turek, who leads the Iowa House Bluffs Council, asserted his position as the strongest candidate to reclaim the U.S. Senate seat, highlighting his success in winning a state House seat in what he dubbed the “reddest district” held by Democrats during the 2024 general election.
Claims of Electability and Experience
Turek confidently stated, “I outperformed President Trump by 50% and every other Democrat in this state. My background and focus on ‘prairie populism’ connect with independents and moderate Republicans. I’m seasoned enough to know what it takes to win, and I’m confident in our approach.” His emphasis on electability and experience was a focal point in his debate with Walls.
Disagreement on Immigration Policy
The debate centered heavily on immigration policy, an issue Walls claimed illustrates their differing legislative records. He specifically pointed to Turek’s support of Senate File 2340 of 2024, which would classify illegal immigration as a state crime and empower state authorities to engage in immigration enforcement. Walls noted the broad opposition this bill faced, including protests from groups like the ACLU and the Catholic Church. He criticized Turek’s vote, asserting, “It was the wrong vote, and I firmly believe we must work towards a more humane immigration system.”
Personal Stakes in Immigration Issues
In response, Turek emphasized the complexity of immigration reform, stating, “As someone married to an immigrant, I understand the process intimately. We need to reform ICE and ensure security, but we also cannot overlook the necessity of a fair path to citizenship.” His experience has shaped his perspective on immigration issues.
Dark Money Allegations and Campaign Integrity
The debate also delved into campaign financing, with Walls previously criticizing Turek for running ads backed by the super PAC VoteVets, known for its support of veterans. Turek explained his ties to the PAC by referencing his personal background as a Paralympian. As the discussion unfolded, Walls countered by questioning Turek’s connections to “dark money,” highlighting Turek’s past as a director of a dark money organization while serving as a state Senate minority leader. Turek refuted these claims, insisting his contributions were transparent and for legitimate nonprofit work.
