Call for Change in APC’s Candidate Selection Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Concerned Citizens Forum of Ebiraland, a socio-political organization, has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider its intention to nominate former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, for the 2027 elections. The group cites urgent concerns regarding security and corruption that could severely impact the party’s electoral prospects.
Concerns Over Credibility and Accountability
In a letter addressed to the party’s National Chairman and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Shehu Ibrahim, the forum highlighted that endorsing a candidate with outstanding allegations could undermine the party’s reputation and credibility in Kogi Central. The group emphasized that this isn’t merely a typical political critique, but rather an urgent appeal stemming from escalating insecurity and a collective sense of responsibility.
Security Issues Linked to Criminal Networks
The forum’s concerns are grounded in serious security issues highlighted by reports from the Nigeria Police Force. They allege the existence of a violent faction called the White Lion Disciples, which has been associated with intimidation, kidnappings, and homicides in Kogi Central. The group underscored the tangible impact these security threats have on families and the broader community, noting that the emotional toll is deeply felt across Ebiraland.
Corruption Allegations and Their Implications
While acknowledging that investigations are ongoing, the group stated that the gravity and consistency of the allegations have fostered an atmosphere of fear and distrust among residents. Furthermore, they pointed to an ongoing corruption investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into more than N80 billion tied to the Bello administration.
Infrastructure Decline and Resource Management
The forum criticized the government for failing to address basic infrastructure needs, notably citing an alarming increase in water scarcity despite the region hosting significant water resources such as Osara Dam and Ekuku Dam. “Women and children are forced to travel long distances every day to secure water. This reflects not only a governance failure but a total breakdown of responsibility,” they stated.
The Risk of Losing Public Trust
The group warned that the APC must address the growing concerns of party members and voters or risk eroding public trust. They remarked that fielding a candidate with unresolved allegations would be politically perilous. The political landscape in Kogi Central is evolving, with voters increasingly open to alternative candidates, such as Natasha Akpoti-Uduahan, making it crucial for the APC to act judiciously.
Call for Transparency in Candidate Selection
In light of these issues, the forum urged the APC leadership to implement a rigorous and transparent screening process for potential candidates, prioritizing those with integrity and credible track records. They stated, “Success in the 2027 election will not rely solely on political machinery, but rather on the trust of the populace and the moral authority of the candidates involved.”
As a final note, the group called for immediate action, emphasizing that failure to address these critical issues could lead to unfavorable historical judgments.
