House Passes Bill for Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma Federal University of Agriculture and Solid Minerals
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives advanced the second reading of a bill aimed at establishing the Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma Federal University of Agriculture and Solid Minerals in Jalingo, Taraba State. This initiative seeks to enhance Nigeria’s capabilities in two vital sectors: agriculture and solid minerals.
The second reading occurred during a plenary session led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, following a debate initiated by Mr. Sadiq Tafida, the representative for the Jalingo/Yolo/Zingu Federal Constituency.
Mr. Tafida emphasized that the proposed university is strategically designed to fill significant gaps in talent development, research, and innovation within both the agriculture and solid minerals industries. “This educational institution aims not only to increase the number of universities in Nigeria but also to address critical shortcomings in agricultural productivity and mineral resource development,” he stated.
Despite Nigeria’s wealth of natural resources, the country faces persistent challenges including food insecurity, high unemployment rates, and the underutilization of its mineral wealth. Mr. Tafida highlighted Taraba State’s rich agricultural potential and mineral reserves, adding that the lack of specialized federal agencies hampers effective resource utilization.
The proposed university will focus on advanced agricultural research, sustainable resource management, and the training of skilled personnel. It aims to foster entrepreneurship and promote self-reliance among Nigeria’s youth, addressing the pressing need for innovation in these sectors.
Mr. Tafida urged his colleagues to support the bill, underscoring the vital role agriculture plays in the Nigerian economy and the untapped opportunities within the mining sector. “Agriculture remains a leading source of employment and a significant contributor to our GDP. However, outdated technology and insufficient research hinder productivity, while the mining industry is still largely unexplored despite its potential to diversify our economy,” he added.
The university is envisioned as a center of excellence, developing and applying modern technologies in agriculture and mining, while fostering collaboration among academia, industry, and government. Mr. Tafida also pointed out the far-reaching economic benefits the institution will provide, such as job creation, stimulating local economies in Jalingo and its surroundings, reducing youth unemployment, and promoting national unity.
Additionally, he noted that naming the facility after General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma serves as a commendable tribute to an individual recognized for his contributions to peace and philanthropy in Nigeria. This initiative aligns with federal policies aimed at economic diversification, food security, and expanding access to quality higher education.
While acknowledging potential funding challenges, Mr. Tafida asserted that the university’s unique mission to integrate agriculture and solid minerals justifies the investment. He stated, “This combination is innovative and essential for Nigeria’s development path.” The bill reflects a broader legislative effort to enhance higher education accessibility, address regional disparities, and position universities as key drivers of research, innovation, and economic growth.
