Vice President Submits Nomination for President Tinubu’s Re-election Campaign
In a significant political move, Vice President Kassim Shettima submitted the nomination and expression of interest documents for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the national executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday. This submission marks a clear intention to secure a second term in office for Tinubu as he prepares for the 2027 presidential elections. Shettima emphasized that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has made strides out of economic and social challenges, calling on party members—including state governors, parliamentarians, and party leaders—to support Tinubu’s candidacy.
Promoting the New Hope Agenda
After officially filing the nomination papers, Vice President Shettima remarked that the Tinubu administration’s “New Hope” agenda had begun to yield positive outcomes, galvanizing support for the president’s bid for a second term. “We stand together as Nigerians and as members of the APC to submit this essential nomination form for our president, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, who seeks to lead us for another four years,” he stated, underscoring the significance of this political endeavor.
Acknowledging Leadership Resilience
Shettima continued by commending President Tinubu for his unwavering determination and capability to guide Nigeria through turbulent times. He articulated that some of the administration’s decisions, although challenging, were necessary to stabilize the economy and secure Nigeria’s future. “The past few years have tested us, yet they have also strengthened the resolve of President Tinubu as a leader,” he noted, asserting that his leadership has helped restore confidence in the nation’s governance.
A Call to Civic Responsibility
Highlighting the importance of civic engagement, the Vice President urged every citizen to play a role in the democratic process. He distinguished between various forms of participation, emphasizing that while some may celebrate governmental achievements, others must remain vigilant in protecting the democratic process. “As fellow citizens, we are all called to defend Nigeria’s future,” he stated, appealing for widespread support for Tinubu’s nomination and, by extension, for his candidacy in the upcoming election.
Endorsements from Key Party Leaders
Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt. Tajudeen Abbas, praised President Tinubu’s leadership during a challenging chapter in Nigeria’s history. He highlighted that Tinubu’s courageous decisions and bold reforms have positioned Nigeria on a trajectory of recovery and growth, making a compelling case for his re-election. Abbas acknowledged the dedication and resilience of party members, noting that the significant gathering of stakeholders—including current and former governors and parliamentarians—represents a pivotal moment in the party’s history as it embarks on re-election efforts.
APC Leadership Supports Tinubu’s Re-election
APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yurwatoda, reinforced the justification for Tinubu’s candidacy, citing the president’s accomplishments in various economic sectors and the support he has received for a second term. Yurwatoda pointed to recent improvements in key economic indicators as evidence of the administration’s efficacy, as recognized by international organizations.
Unity Among Progressive Governors
Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, echoed the sentiment of unanimous support for President Tinubu, noting the attendance of many governors at the nomination event. He remarked on the favorable impact of Tinubu’s leadership since his inauguration in 2023, which has strengthened the party’s position in both gubernatorial and congressional contests. Uzodinma asserted the commitment of progressive governors to tirelessly campaign for Tinubu, ensuring that he can continue his work to improve the economy.
Notably, governors from various states—including Plateau, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Ondo, Katsina, Borno, Cross River, Taraba, Yobe, Nasarawa, and Bayelsa—were present at the event, alongside MPs elected on the APC platform and members of the National Working Committee.
