McIlroy Returns to PGA Tour with Steady Performance at Truist Championship
Rory McIlroy made a notable return to the PGA Tour at the Truist Championship, completing the first round with a steady 1-under par 70, marked by 17 consecutive pars. The Northern Irish golfer, who enjoyed a four-week hiatus after successfully defending his title at the Masters in April, has a strong affinity for Quail Hollow, having previously won the tournament four times.
In his inaugural victory in 2010, McIlroy recorded an impressive 23 birdies and two eagles over four rounds. However, it took him 17 holes on Thursday to make his first birdie. Looking to finish strong, McIlroy knocked in a long lag putt on the 18th hole, securing his final score of 70. Had he missed that birdie, it would have marked the first time in his PGA career that he finished a round with 18 consecutive pars.
Displaying impressive ball flight throughout the day, McIlroy nailed a huge 335-yard drive on the par-4 second hole, but struggled with his putting. He missed several birdie opportunities, notably a significant right-to-left putt on the 12th and another chance on the 13th.
Despite his putting woes, McIlroy remained composed, stating, “I wasn’t frustrated. I felt like I was making good putts; some days they just don’t go in.” He acknowledged his struggles with reading the greens, noting that he sometimes over-read and then under-read a few putts. By the end of the round, he felt a sense of rhythm returning to his game.
After holing out on the 18th, McIlroy celebrated with raised arms, relieved to finally see a putt drop. Reflecting on the day, he remarked, “It was nice to see that one putt go in at the end.” He admitted he had almost forgotten what it was like to go an entire round without a birdie.
American Matt McCarty stole the spotlight, ending the first round at the top of the leaderboard with a remarkable 8-under par 64. Sungjae Im followed closely in second place at 7-under, but play was eventually suspended due to inclement weather. The leaderboard includes several European players, with Christopher Reitan, Harry Hall, Nikolai Hujgaard, Sepp Straka, and Canadian Nick Taylor all vying for the lead at 5-under.
Fleetwood’s Strong Start Amid Struggles
Tommy Fleetwood, who has faced challenges with his game recently, kick-started his round with an eagle on the first hole and added four birdies, finishing with a solid 4-under par 67. Despite a strong performance, he was unable to capitalize on his momentum, missing a par putt on the final hole.
Fleetwood expressed satisfaction with his performance, saying, “We had a perfect start. The eagle on No. 10 was great. The course conditions were softer than expected, but I felt we played well overall.” He elaborated, commenting on the difficulties of putting, remarking, “At the end of the day, putting is about getting the ball in the hole, and when it seems elusive, it can be quite challenging.”
Although he finished on a minor disappointment after missing the last putt, Fleetwood focused on the positives, believing that today’s performance was pivotal for his momentum. He shares eighth place with fellow Briton Alex Fitzpatrick, who is also making strides since earning his PGA Tour card.
Meanwhile, Justin Rose ended the day at level par, recording four birdies and four bogeys. The British golfer, currently with the McLaren club, faced a challenging week, finishing T65 at the Cadillac Championship. Reacting to a misfired approach shot on the first hole, Rose expressed visible frustration, emphasizing the mental battles players confront on the course.
As the competition unfolds, the question remains: who will emerge victorious at the Truist Championship? Fans can tune in for live coverage throughout the week on Sky Sports, with early broadcasts beginning at 4 PM on Thursday, followed by full coverage starting at 7 PM.
