NEPZA and NAFDAC Collaborate for Enhanced Regulatory Oversight
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and the National Food and Drug Control Authority (NAFDAC) have announced a commitment to improve joint supervision of medicines and consumables produced within free trade zones. This collaboration is aimed at ensuring the quality and safety of products entering the market.
Strategic Meeting in Abuja
This decision was reached during a recent meeting at NEPZA Headquarters in Abuja, where NAFDAC Director-General, Mr. Mojisola Adeyeye, visited his counterpart, Mr. Olufemi Ogunyemi. The engagement underscores the importance of cooperation between the two regulatory bodies to enhance oversight in the pharmaceutical and consumables sector.
Strengthening Regulatory Functions
Adeyeye emphasized that the objective of the visit was to bolster partnerships that would support NAFDAC’s regulatory duties. These responsibilities include overseeing the import, export, production, and distribution of pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics by entities operating within the free trade zone.
Commitment to Consumer Safety
Expressing gratitude for NEPZA’s hospitality, Adeyeye highlighted the shared responsibility to protect citizens from counterfeit medications and consumables that may infiltrate markets. He reaffirmed NAFDAC’s dedication to rigorous testing and compliance with established standards aimed at controlling the quality of products across various industries in Nigeria.
Focus on Medicine Efficacy and Food Safety
Mr. Adeyeye also spoke on the critical role of the free trade zone in driving Nigeria’s industrialization and economic growth. He called for concerted efforts to streamline processes and monitor the efficacy of medicines and food safety, particularly for those exported to customs territories from within these zones.
Addressing Regulatory Challenges
Ogunyemi shared insights on the collaborative plan that encompasses 63 zones and over 900 companies, framing it as a vital economic drivers for the country. However, he acknowledged that the regulation of these entities poses significant challenges. “A joint effort is essential to combat fraudulent activities, as the health of the population is at stake,” he stated.
Pioneering Compliance Efforts
According to Ogunyemi, NEPZA has long been a leader in preventing the abuse of zones for illicit activities. He expressed strong support for this new partnership, which aims to enhance global compliance standards for all production and export activities in Nigeria.
Formation of Technical Committee
A key outcome of the meeting was the establishment of an eight-member technical committee. This group will investigate the factors that hinder the effective execution of regulatory functions in free trade areas, highlighting the commitment of both agencies to continuous improvement in regulatory oversight.
