APC Commences Candidate Selection for Senate and House of Representatives
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has initiated the process of selecting candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives as it gears up for upcoming party primaries. Scheduled primaries for the House of Representatives are set for May 15, 2026, while the Senate primaries will take place on May 18, 2026.
Disqualification Petition Filed Against Senator Representing Ekiti North
In a developing situation, Hon. Ahuye Idowu, a key figure in the Ekiti State APC, has formally petitioned the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Idowu is calling for the disqualification of senatorial aspirant and incumbent Senator Cyril Fasuyi, citing issues of non-compliance with party principles.
Concerns Over Legislative Performance Raised
Idowu spoke to reporters following the submission of his petition at the party’s Abuja secretariat. He expressed concerns regarding Fasuyi’s legislative performance, asserting that the senator’s tenure has failed to align with the party’s “New Hope” agenda. “Senator Cyril Fasuyi has not sponsored any significant legislation that would benefit the people of Ekiti North, Ekiti State, or Nigeria during his nearly three years in office,” he stated.
Critique of Engagement in Senate Proceedings
Idowu further criticized Fasuyi, noting a lack of substantial contributions to Senate debates and motions. He emphasized that this absence of representation effectively silences the voice of Ekiti North in the Senate.
Public Review Initiative Highlights Performance Issues
Reflecting on his advocacy efforts, Idowu recalled conducting a public analysis of the performance of current and former National Assembly members last year. His aim was to encourage improvement among legislators. While some members responded positively to his findings, he alleged that Senator Fasuyi reacted negatively, allegedly sending individuals to intimidate him over the feedback.
Allegations of Intimidation and Misuse of Authority
Idowu detailed an incident on July 31, 2025, where he was reportedly arrested based on a false complaint instigated by Senator Fasuyi. He stated that he was not informed of any formal complaint prior to his arrest and claimed the senator incited police action against him.
Legal Proceedings and Subsequent Release
After being brought before the Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court, Idowu recounted being pressured to retract his statements about Fasuyi’s performance in exchange for release. He refused and was subsequently remanded in custody pending investigations, although the charges were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Warning to the National Working Committee
Mr. Idowu has made it clear that if the NWC fails to act on his request to disqualify Senator Fasuyi, he will be prepared to challenge the senator directly during the primaries. He asserted that individuals lacking demonstrable achievements should not be eligible to run as candidates in the 2027 elections.
