Nigeria and the US Strengthen Defense Cooperation Against Terrorism
In a significant escalation of military engagement, two Nigerian soldiers and numerous militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were killed in a brutal confrontation near a military base in Magumeri, Borno State. This clash occurred when forces from the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled an assault from ISWAP fighters.
According to reports, the attackers attempted to breach the base under the cover of darkness in the early morning hours. However, military personnel mounted a robust defense, inflicting heavy casualties on the insurgents while securing a large cache of weapons, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles, and ammunition.
Following the clash, military officials conducted a thorough examination of the area. Their findings included bloodstains and evidence of bodies left behind by the insurgents, underscoring the significant losses the attackers sustained during the failed incursion. Meanwhile, the surviving officers and injured soldiers are currently receiving medical care.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, who leads media and information for Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed that while terrorists made minor inroads into isolated parts of the camp, the troops responded with courage, successfully neutralizing many assailants.
Uba emphasized, “The subsequent analysis of the operational area showed extensive blood traces and the recovery of terrorist bodies, affirming that the attackers experienced heavy losses.” He noted that despite these achievements, two soldiers lost their lives in the encounter, though those injured are stable and being treated. Additionally, some military equipment and temporary structures were damaged in the firefight.
Meanwhile, the defense partnership between Nigeria and the United States is gaining momentum with the establishment of the Defense Agency Technical Working Group (DITWG) under the 2026 Defense Cooperation Roadmap. This initiative aims to enhance military capabilities to tackle terrorism, insecurity, and regional instability.
During the launch event, Kate Dave, head of the U.S. delegation, highlighted the importance of strategic planning and institutional development for effective counterterrorism efforts. Meanwhile, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, leading the Nigerian delegation, expressed optimism that this cooperation will bolster the combat readiness of the Nigerian Armed Forces, paving the way for lasting peace and stability.
In another development, troops from Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West conducted a successful combat patrol operation in Dumburu village, Zamfara State, neutralizing three terrorists. Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the media officer for this operation, reported that troops utilized superior firepower, forcing the militants to retreat and inflicting casualties.
The operation yielded significant results, with the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one machine gun, a locally produced handgun, seven rifle magazines, and a total of 571 rounds of ammunition, all without any military casualties. Danja urged local residents to continue providing timely and reliable intelligence to support ongoing military efforts in the Northwest.
