Demonstrators Unite in St. Albans Against Immigration Enforcement
On Friday, hundreds gathered at Taylor Park in St. Albans, Vermont, to express solidarity with individuals targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The event began with a rally that included speeches, musical performances, and a march through the city, culminating in a nonviolent sit-in at a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility.
Protester Daisy Heibel emphasized the importance of community support, stating that such gatherings remind individuals they are not alone in their struggles. Heibel remarked, “Your community is here with you and we are all united. And that gives you hope.”
The rally’s organizers aimed to spotlight the actions of ICE and CBP, calling for significant changes in current immigration enforcement policies. Fellow protester Paul Markowitz highlighted what he sees as law enforcement’s failure to uphold the law, insisting, “We want them to abide by the law.”
The substantial turnout had local repercussions, with nearby schools closing early due to concerns over traffic disruptions and crowding. Meanwhile, counter-protesters voiced their support for federal immigration enforcement, questioning the legitimacy of providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants. Counter-protester Ryan LaRose commented on the ongoing debate, asking why some consider it acceptable for undocumented individuals to seek shelter in the U.S.
After the downtown rally, over 100 demonstrators marched to the federal facility, where they conducted a sit-in and presented a list of demands. Interestingly, the facility had already been closed prior to the demonstration. During the rally, one protester asserted, “We demand that ICE and CBP officers only arrest people for probable cause.”
Additionally, members of various interfaith groups paid a visit to the Department of Homeland Security after the rally, where they blessed the building with holy water, further underscoring their message of compassion and justice.
City officials had anticipated large crowds throughout the day, with NBC5 staff monitoring the scene for several hours. While reports of traffic delays and significant crowds circulated, the demonstration remained peaceful. NBC5 has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for a response regarding the events that unfolded.
