SDP Names Adewole Adebayo as Presidential Candidate for 2027 Elections
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) officially nominated Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 general elections during its national convention held on Saturday in Bauchi State. This selection comes amid widespread criticism directed at the ruling party, the judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Adebayo emerged as the party’s candidate unopposed, receiving unanimous backing from delegates and party leaders throughout the convention. The motion to adopt him as the standard bearer was initially put forth by the SDP’s Lagos State chairman, subsequently gaining endorsement from the chairpersons of all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), culminating in overwhelming support from convention attendees.
This development positions Adebayo as a prominent contender in what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race in 2027. Ousmane Bugadje, chairman of the convention’s planning committee, seized the opportunity to voice concerns about the current political landscape, accusing the ruling party of diminishing democratic freedoms and stifling opposition voices.
Bugadje highlighted the adversities faced by opposition parties, attributing these challenges to state institutions like INEC and the judiciary, which he claims have strayed from their neutral roles. He characterized these institutions as tools for “unscrupulous politicians” looking to undermine democratic processes and eliminate political competition.
He stated that the ruling party’s maneuvers to restrict political space and silence opposition rank among the gravest injustices of today. Bugadje called out the collaborators in INEC and the judiciary for their complicity in these actions, suggesting they lack character and fail to grasp the lessons of history.
Despite these challenges, Bugadje commended the SDP for its resilience and growth, attributing this to the unwavering commitment of party members nationwide. He encouraged delegates to remain steadfast in their support for the party’s principles and democratic goals, comparing the current political repression to the military rule under the late Head of State, Sani Abacha.
Bugadje warned that history has consistently shown that attempts to suppress dissent ultimately fail. He urged vigilance and accountability for those undermining democratic institutions, asserting that Nigerians are closely watching the unfolding political landscape. He concluded that the SDP remains committed to its core values, emphasizing the importance of taking the right actions at decisive moments.
Adebayo, a lawyer and businessman, aims to rally support during the 2023 presidential campaign by addressing priorities such as governance reform, economic revitalization, and national unity. His designation as the SDP’s consensus candidate marks the beginning of the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections, signaling a concerted effort to strengthen their position against the ruling party.
