Warnings Issued Over Fake Campaign Posters of Goodluck Jonathan
The Tanim Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is a registered member of the party, asserting that he recently engaged in the party’s digital membership registration initiative. This announcement follows the circulation of misleading campaign posters online, which falsely associate Jonathan with various political parties in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released yesterday by the faction’s National Public Relations Secretary, Ini Emebobon, the group cautioned Nigerians against misrepresenting Jonathan’s political affiliations. Titled “Beware of Fake GEJ Campaign Posters,” the statement highlights that the posters inaccurately portray Jonathan as either the main presidential candidate or as a vice-presidential option alongside other notable figures.
“Campaign posters showcasing President Goodluck Jonathan’s image, either alone or with other distinguished leaders, have been widely disseminated across social media,” the statement noted. The PDP faction emphasized that these materials falsely indicate Jonathan’s association with various political entities, contrary to his actual membership in the PDP.
The statement reaffirmed that Jonathan is an active member of the party under the leadership of Kabiru Tanim Turaki (SAN). It further clarified that he personally registered during the recent digital membership enrollment drive. This registration was confirmed to members of the Interim National Working Committee during a meeting with Jonathan held the previous day.
The faction insisted on the importance of addressing any confusion regarding Jonathan’s political status. According to Nigerian electoral law, dual party registration is illegal and carries penalties. The PDP faction expressed concern that certain individuals might attempt to manipulate the party’s membership database by enrolling Jonathan and other politicians with multiple parties without their knowledge.
“We are aware that pranksters may not only create and distribute fraudulent campaign posters but may also collaborate with influential associates to insert President Jonathan’s information—along with that of other prominent members and opposition figures—into the databases of various political parties,” the statement asserted.
The PDP faction called upon the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to dismiss these misleading activities. “We therefore urge the public, especially INEC, to be vigilant regarding this misconduct and disregard these fraudulent claims,” the statement concluded.
