Legacy of Service in New York’s Law Enforcement
In New York, a melting pot of cultures and aspirations, the story of Abdelalim Azab epitomizes the immigrant journey toward the American Dream. Having fled Kuwait during the Gulf War, Azab found his new home in the bustling streets of New York City, where he transformed his challenges into opportunities. As he navigated through a series of jobs—including food vendor and taxi driver—he remained focused on a singular goal: to serve his community as a police officer.
A Journey of Resilience and Aspiration
Transitioning to life in America was far from easy for Azab. “I’m a first-generation immigrant, and finding my way was tough,” he recalls. However, his determination fueled his resolve to achieve his ambitions. For him, becoming a police officer was more than a career; it was a calling to make a difference.
Fulfilling a Lifelong Dream
In July 2001, Azab’s dream materialized when he officially joined the New York Police Department (NYPD). His aspiration had been unwavering, even when faced with skepticism. “I remember getting pulled over while driving a taxi and asking the officers how I could join the NYPD. They laughed,” he said. Nonetheless, his ambition never wavered as he dedicated himself to a career that would span two decades, culminating in the rank of detective.
A Lasting Impact on Family
Throughout his tenure, Azab’s commitment did not go unnoticed by his son, Sameer Azab. “As a child, I would watch my father prepare for work, fascinated by the stories he shared. They captivated me and planted the seeds of my own ambition,” Sameer reflected. The influence of his father’s dedication laid a foundation for Sameer’s aspirations to enter law enforcement.
Continuing the Family Tradition
The moment Sameer Azab decided to follow in his father’s footsteps was marked by a significant event—the promotion ceremony where his father adorned him with a police hat. At that instant, he realized his passion for policing had been ignited. Fast forward to January 2024, and Sameer has now become an officer himself, working in the Q-Team division at Brooklyn’s 68th Precinct, focusing on quality-of-life issues.
Embracing the Spirit of Service
Today, Sameer carries forward his father’s legacy while also nurturing his personal commitment to serve others. “I see what my father has accomplished and strive to build on that legacy,” he explained. His father’s lessons extend beyond the badge, instilling values of empathy and dedication that inspire him daily, even while off duty.
Commitment to Community and Family
Both father and son share an unwavering commitment to their missions as police officers, each motivated by a desire to uplift their community. Abdelalim has laid a strong foundation, while Sameer is set to build on it, embodying the principles of service and integrity that define their family’s legacy in law enforcement.
