Impending Crisis Threatens All Progressives Congress Ahead of 2027 Elections
The turmoil currently brewing within the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) poses a significant challenge to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as it gears up for the 2027 general elections. According to reports by Adedayo Akinwale, swift action is essential to mitigate the potential fallout.
Motion of No Confidence Passed Against PGF Chairman
In an unexpected development last Thursday, 20 governors from the APC voted to pass a motion of no confidence against PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma. The governors cited issues of financial irregularities and a loss of faith in his leadership.
Leadership Shift Within the PGF
The PGF, which serves as the collective body for governors elected under the APC banner, appeared to be fractured following the news of Uzodinma’s potential replacement by Enugu State Governor Peter Mba.
Extraordinary Meeting Sparks Controversy
During an extraordinary session convened in Abuja, the governors reportedly decided to install Mba as Uzodinma’s successor shortly after Vice President Kassim Shettima submitted President Bola Tinubu’s presidential nomination form. Concerns were raised regarding Uzodinma’s leadership style and various allegations of financial misconduct. Many governors expressed dissatisfaction over his inability to address these accusations adequately.
List of Dissatisfied Governors
A number of governors have voiced their discontent with Uzodinma’s leadership, including Ahmadu Fintiri from Adamawa, Dauda Lawal from Zamfara, and several others, including Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom and Simon Hubala of Rivers. The list extends to governors from Bayelsa, Benue, Niger, and beyond, indicating widespread unrest within the ranks of the APC.
Official Denials of Leadership Changes
In an effort to quell the mounting tensions, PGF Secretary General Folorunsho Aluko released a statement rejecting claims regarding Uzodinma’s removal. He described the media reports as false and misleading, asserting the absence of any meeting where such a decision was made.
Emergency Meeting and Vote of Confidence
Despite the official denial, Uzodinma convened an emergency meeting in Abuja last Friday, where a vote of confidence was passed by 18 supportive governors. After a closed-door discussion, they expressed trust in Uzodinma’s leadership, amid fears that the party might be further destabilized.
Concluding Remarks on Party Unity and Focus
Following the meeting, Governor Kebbi Dr. Nasir Idris articulated support for Uzodinma, emphasizing the unity among APC governors. He stated, “We are stronger now than at any other time in our history,” while asserting the party’s commitment to the upcoming primaries and securing victory in 2027. With tensions still simmering, only time will tell if the resolve shown by the PGF will effectively quell the crisis as the APC prepares for the electoral battleground ahead.
