Training Initiative Strengthens Nigeria’s Dairy Sector
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has successfully trained 100 smallholder dairy farmers in Ibadan, Oyo State, aiming to enhance Nigeria’s dairy sector and boost local milk production.
This development was announced on Monday by Henrietta Okokong, Deputy Director General of Information and Public Relations within the ministry. The training primarily equipped participants with essential knowledge on best practices in dairy farming, advanced husbandry techniques, and sustainable methods for milk production, collection, and processing.
Government’s Commitment to Dairy Production
Idris Ajimobi, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Livestock Development, emphasized the importance of this initiative in increasing dairy farmers’ production capacity and overall output. He highlighted that promoting self-sufficiency in livestock production begins by empowering farmers at the grassroots level.
This initiative is designed to enhance productivity, ensure quality, and develop a sustainable dairy value chain, ultimately benefiting rural communities and the nation at large. Ajimobi reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to unlocking the economic potential of the livestock sector through targeted policies, strategic partnerships, and impactful programs.
The Role of Smallholder Farmers
Florence Karuru, Oyo State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, underscored the vital role smallholder dairy farmers play in Nigeria’s agricultural framework. She referred to these farmers as the backbone of local milk production, whose resilience and commitment help sustain communities throughout Oyo State and beyond.
However, Karuru pointed out significant challenges confronting the dairy sector, including low productivity, insufficient animal healthcare, poor hygiene practices, and limited access to modern technology. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving the quality, safety, and profitability of dairy production.
Alignment with National Strategy
The training initiative aligns with the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, which aims to bolster productivity, enhance livelihoods, reduce import dependence, and fortify food and nutrition security. Karuru emphasized that the training offered is centered not only on education but also on transformational change. Participants are encouraged to become ambassadors for best practices, sharing their newly acquired knowledge to inspire others within their communities.
Comprehensive Training Program
The program includes discussions on sustainable feed provision through improved pasture development and forage conservation, as well as breeding, herd health management, and effective milk handling practices. In her remarks, Rachel Eitayo-Alioli, president of the Women’s Dairy Producers Association, praised the government for prioritizing the dairy sector while advocating for greater involvement of women in dairy farming.
Eitayo-Alioli stated that supporting small-scale dairy farmers can significantly increase milk production, leading to broader economic benefits that positively impact the overall economy. Participant Moyosole Olatunde echoed this sentiment, calling for increased youth engagement in dairy farming, noting that innovative ideas from young people could accelerate this transformation if the government provides adequate support.
Program Highlights and Future Plans
The training includes a blend of classroom instruction, interactive discussions, pictorial demonstrations, and hands-on practical sessions. Additionally, participants received vital resources, including heifers, feed, and salt licks, to enhance their dairy operations and productivity.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to scaling up similar initiatives nationwide, as part of its broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s livestock industry and ensure sustainable growth in dairy production.
