De Zerbi Critiques Referee Performance in Spurs vs. Leeds Draw
Manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed concerns over referee Jared Gillett’s composure during the recent 1-1 draw between Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United. De Zerbi suggested that the pressure from recent VAR controversies, notably involving West Ham, might be impacting match officials’ decision-making.

After a thorough review, Gillett changed his initial call and awarded Leeds the penalty. De Zerbi, reflecting on the officiating during the match, remarked, “The referees weren’t calm today, possibly due to the pressure from the previous day’s match involving Arsenal.”
The manager pointed out, “We struggled with the pressure and lacked the passion for the ball. It wasn’t just us; the referee seemed unsettled too.” He voiced his confusion over the VAR situation from the previous day, stating, “That was a clear foul—it’s unacceptable not to call that.”

Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher noted that despite Matthijs Tell’s lackluster moments in the second half, De Zerbi should continue to endorse the young forward’s attacking potential, which could prove vital for Spurs as they seek to avoid relegation.
Tell, who initially dazzled with a stunning goal, found himself in hot water shortly thereafter when he was penalized. Carragher criticized Tell’s judgment, saying, “It was a poor decision on his part.
