Junior Achievement Africa and ExxonMobil Foundation Unveil STEM Africa 2.0 Initiative
Junior Achievement (JA) Africa, in collaboration with the ExxonMobil Foundation, has announced the launch of the 2026 ExxonMobil Foundation STEM Africa Program. This initiative aims to equip young Africans with essential skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and artificial intelligence (AI).
Expanding Educational Opportunities
Building on previous successes, the program has already engaged over 10,000 young individuals across Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and Nigeria. The latest iteration, STEM Africa 2.0, seeks to expand its reach by targeting an additional 4,000 students aged 14 to 17, providing them with the critical skills necessary for thriving in an increasingly digital economy.
Addressing Skills Gap for Africa’s Youth
The launch arrives at a pivotal moment for the African continent, where access to STEM and digital skills remains limited despite a rapidly growing youth population. The program combines hands-on learning experiences, mentorship from industry leaders, and real-world problem-solving activities designed to foster meaningful engagement in emerging sectors, including energy, sustainability, and digital innovation.
Dynamic Learning Experience
The initiative features a structured four-stage learning journey. Participants will take part in a series of STEM and AI quizzes, zonal competitions, a national innovation camp, and a final continental showcase at the Africa Energy Week conference. This multifaceted approach moves beyond traditional classroom models, enabling students to develop practical solutions to genuine challenges while enhancing their confidence, collaborative abilities, and critical thinking skills.

Simi Nwogugu, President and CEO of JA Africa, emphasized the importance of youth leadership in shaping Africa’s future. “Through STEM Africa 2.0, we are not only enhancing STEM capabilities but also laying the groundwork for AI and innovation. Our goal is to prepare young people across the continent to lead and address significant local and global challenges,” she stated.
