Passengers Recount Dismaying Experience on Max Air Flight
Passengers aboard a Max Air flight from Abuja to Katsina experienced a terrifying ordeal on Monday when the plane reportedly developed a technical fault shortly after takeoff, prompting the pilot to execute an emergency return to Abuja.
Eyewitnesses described a disturbing scene inside the aircraft. Many passengers reported a loud bang, followed by a sudden drop in altitude that caused widespread panic as the plane struggled to stabilize.
Video Evidence Captures Panic Following Emergency Landing
A video shared on Facebook by Gwanda Munirat, media assistant to the Katsina state governor, showed passengers congregating outside the aircraft after its safe return to Abuja. Munirat conveyed that the aircraft began shaking just a few minutes post takeoff.
She recounted the tense moments saying, “A few minutes after takeoff, the plane suddenly started to shake violently and made a loud crashing noise. It was a very frightening experience. Many of us were scared, as it felt like something was seriously wrong.”
Immediate Response and Communications
The pilot later informed passengers that the aircraft would be returning to Abuja due to technical issues. “Thankfully we landed safely and are now back on the ground standing in front of the plane,” Munirat added, relieved but shaken.
Numerous passengers—among them government officials—found themselves stranded at the airport, awaiting further clarification from the airline regarding their travel plans.
Passenger Experiences Highlight Growing Concerns
Another passenger, Obinna Chukwuezi, echoed the alarming sentiments on his social media. He detailed his experience, stating, “We boarded a Max Air flight from Abuja to Katsina, but less than 20 minutes after departure, there was a loud bang and the aircraft suddenly fell, struggling to maintain its balance. A few moments later, I heard another loud noise and thought we might not make it.”
Chukwuezi also confirmed that the pilot announced the emergency return for safety reasons, adding urgency to the unfolding situation.
Near-Death Encounter Shared on Social Media
Similarly, Dr. Zaiyad Ramold reflected on his frightening experience on social media, branding it his “first near-death experience on a Max Air flight.” He expressed feelings of helplessness amid the uncertainty, sharing, “Feeling helpless amidst the uncertainty of life or death is terrible. Alhamdulillah, back to Abuja.”
No Official Response at This Time
As concerns mounted, Premium Times reached out to Max Air for a statement regarding the incident but had not received a response at the time of this report. The Director of Public Affairs and Family Support at the Nigeria Security Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed they were not immediately aware of the incident but promised to provide updates as they arose.
Increased Scrutiny of Airline Operations
This latest incident has reignited scrutiny over the reliability of airline operations and technical performance within Nigeria’s aviation sector, where passengers are increasingly concerned about delays, disruptions, and safety incidents. Earlier this year, Max Air had announced a temporary suspension of Umrah flight operations due to a technical issue that grounded one of its aircraft.
In that instance, the airline emphasized that passenger safety remained its top priority while offering apologies and arranging alternative accommodations for affected travelers.
