Empowering Africa’s Youth Through Technology
Fikir recognizes a significant opportunity for young people in Africa to address pressing social issues by leveraging today’s diverse technological advancements. Her journey in technology started from an unexpected pivot away from a budding career in journalism, redirected by her father’s concerns about the risks associated with the profession.
A Transformative Educational Journey
After graduating from university in 2000, Fikir initially set her sights on journalism. However, her father advised against it, citing fears for her safety amid potential conflicts. Undeterred, she revisited her university’s bulletin board and found a spark of interest in information technology, a field she knew little about but that excited her father. With his support, she embarked on her career in IT.
Adapting in a Rapidly Changing Landscape
Reflecting on her first class, Fikir recalls having to learn basic computer operations by observing her classmates. Today, she appreciates the unpredictability and dynamism of the tech sector. “No two days are the same. Technology evolves at an astonishing speed. Where changes used to take months, now they can occur within weeks,” she remarks. This rapid development, especially in the age of AI, fosters an environment primed for continuous learning and adaptation.
The Dual Role of a CIO
As the Chief Information Officer at e4 Strategic, a prominent South African firm focusing on digital transformation and SaaS, Fikir emphasizes the need for a solid technological foundation while remaining open to innovation. “A CIO must uphold uncompromising principles, yet also create a space for the responsible deployment of emerging technologies. It’s about finding the right balance between security and innovation,” she explains.
A Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Fikir advocates for a culture of continuous education, nurturing both formal and informal learning experiences. “After work, I prioritize reading and exploring global developments. I’m always enrolled in courses to keep my skills relevant and my horizons broad,” she states. Building connections with peers is equally critical; she values platforms like CIO South Africa that enhance networking and knowledge sharing in her field.
The Cautious Embrace of AI
In recent discussions, Fikir highlighted the transformative role of AI in the workplace. She envisions a future where AI functions more like a collaborative colleague, allowing professionals to shift their focus to creative endeavors and decision-making. “Transparency is essential when integrating AI. Employees must understand not just how AI works, but also the limitations of its data usage, ensuring that human judgment is central,” she stresses.
Creating Impact Through Technology
Fikir’s passion for African innovation drives her belief that today’s youth can significantly impact their communities through technology. She recalls an inspiring conference where students from Eastern Cape were tasked with identifying local issues. One particular initiative involved a student from rural KwaZulu-Natal who developed a system using geospatial technology to predict landslides, demonstrating a practical application of technology to address real-world challenges.
