British Official Praises Kwara State’s Commitment to Gender Equality
Gil Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner, has commended Kwara State under the leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for its exemplary commitment to gender equality. Lever described the governor as a trailblazer in promoting women’s rights and political involvement, as highlighted in a statement by Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, Deputy Chief Spokesperson of the Government House.
Recognition for Women’s Representation in Governance
During his visit to Ahmadu Bello House in Ilorin, Lever acknowledged Abdulrazaq as a steadfast advocate for women’s representation in government. “Kwara has appointed more than 50% of its cabinet members as women, underscoring the crucial role of women in political and legislative spheres for Nigeria’s economic advancement,” he stated.
Commendation for Women’s Reservation Bill Support
Lever expressed high regard for the governor’s support of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which has earned him the title of ‘HeForShe’ Ambassador. This recognition highlights Abdulrazaq’s impactful efforts to advocate for gender equality in Nigeria.
Focus on Digital Skills and Young Talent Development
Lever noted that the UK government is actively working to enhance digital skills across various states, aiming to nurture young talent in the technology sector. During his visit, he planned to explore the Ilorin Innovation Hub, an initiative supported by the UK that seeks to cultivate skills and fulfill aspirations within the tech industry, providing innovators with access to global networks.
Community Hub Initiatives to Enhance Digital Access
“Through our Digital Access Programme, we are committed to improving digital skills among young people in the technology sector,” Lever emphasized. He also mentioned the recent launch of a community hub in Olinka, Ifelodun Local Government, which is expected to benefit over 50,000 residents by providing access to technology and relevant skills training.
Support for Free and Credible Elections in Nigeria
Lever reiterated the British government’s stance on supporting free and credible elections in Nigeria, affirming that Downing Street maintains neutrality and refrains from favoring any political parties. “We all desire peaceful and participatory elections that respect institutions,” she remarked, highlighting the importance of these values in a democratic society.
Governor Abdulrazaq Highlights Economic Progress in Kwara
Governor Abdulrazaq took the opportunity to showcase the advancements his administration has achieved across various sectors of the economy. “Since our administration began in 2019, significant improvements have been made in health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure, reversing the dire circumstances we inherited,” he stated, addressing criticisms from opposition groups.
Advancements in Education and Health Sectors
The governor elaborated on the positive outcomes of investments in education and healthcare, noting the expansion of access to university education with the establishment of two campuses for the Kwara State University in the northern and southern regions. “By the time I complete my term in 2027, Kwara will have five teaching hospitals, significantly addressing the health sector’s shortages,” he promised.
Promoting Agricultural Development and Security
Additionally, Abdulrazaq discussed the state’s agricultural initiatives, including the establishment of a shea processing factory in Kiama, which is set to become Nigeria’s second-largest factory in this domain. He also addressed security concerns, detailing collaborative efforts with various stakeholders to enhance safety in rural areas.
