Governor Fintiri Commits to Enhancing Flood Mitigation Efforts
Ahmadu Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State, has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthen its collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to combat the persistent threat of flooding within the region.
Meeting with NEMA’s Director-General
During a recent courtesy visit by NEMA’s Director-General Zubaydah Umar at the government headquarters in Yola, the state capital, Governor Fintiri emphasized the critical nature of flooding as a major environmental challenge faced by many communities in Adamawa, particularly during the rainy season. He noted that this recurrent natural disaster not only claims lives but also causes extensive property damage and displaces numerous residents annually.
Recognition of the National Flood Awareness Campaign
The governor praised NEMA for selecting Adamawa as a primary state for the 2026 National Flood Awareness Campaign, highlighting the initiative as timely and essential given the significant losses incurred from flooding in previous years.
Proactive Strategies for Flood Mitigation
Reflecting on the devastating impact of last year’s floods, Governor Fintiri shared that his administration has implemented several proactive strategies aimed at reducing future flood damage. These measures include monthly environmental hygiene training sessions, ongoing drainage system maintenance, and awareness campaigns encouraging residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer, elevated locations.
Plans for Temporary Shelters
In an effort to support those affected by flooding, the governor also outlined plans to establish temporary shelters for displaced persons in the event of future flooding incidents, underscoring the need for immediate support as the rainy season approaches in many parts of the country.
Call for Enhanced Support and Collaboration
Governor Fintiri urged the federal government and various intervention agencies to increase their assistance for flood victims. He stressed the importance of collaboration among government bodies, traditional institutions, community leaders, and residents to effectively tackle environmental challenges and safeguard lives and properties.
NEMA Launches National Flood Awareness Campaign
During the visit, NEMA Director-General Zubaydah Umar stated that the outreach is part of the official launch of the National Flood Awareness Campaign for 2026, aimed at educating citizens about flood-related dangers. He noted that forecasts from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predict that approximately 33 states will be affected by flooding this year, with Adamawa identified as one of the most vulnerable regions.
Strategies for Disaster Preparedness
Umar explained that the growing impacts of climate change and the severe floods experienced in recent years have prompted NEMA to formulate a strategy focused on flood mitigation and disaster preparedness. This strategy includes capacity building, the implementation of early warning systems, public awareness initiatives, and collaboration with key stakeholders. He commended Governor Fintiri for fostering a strong partnership with NEMA and encouraged traditional leaders to amplify awareness campaigns while urging residents to adhere strictly to safety guidelines.
