The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) convened its inaugural national conference on Wednesday in Abuja, presenting a new vision for leadership, institutional reform, and transformation in Nigeria. The event, themed “Roadmap to Credible Leadership,” drew party leaders, delegates, members of the diplomatic community, special guests, and journalists nationwide, marking a significant moment for the party on the national political landscape.
Keynote Address Focuses on Leadership Challenges
DLA National Chairman Barr. Samuel M. Meme delivered the keynote address, emphasizing that the convention represents more than a political gathering—it signifies the foundation of a movement rooted in a revitalized ideology, discipline, and leadership. He noted that despite Nigeria’s wealth in human and natural resources, its primary challenge remains a profound leadership crisis. Meme asserted that the nation’s progress hinges on the caliber of its leadership.
Defining Credible Leadership
According to Meme, credible leadership must be anchored in competency, integrity, accountability, courage, vision, and sacrifice rather than ethnicity, propaganda, or political sentiment. He highlighted, “The crisis facing our country today is fundamentally a crisis of leadership.” He articulated that effective leadership differentiates thriving nations from those struggling to advance.
DLA’s Ideological Foundations and Focus Areas
The chairman elaborated on DLA’s commitment to intentional leadership development, revealing that the party is guided by a long-term vision for national transformation. Meme outlined key ideological pillars, including leadership-first governance, a technology-driven economy, institutional reform, justice, accountability, and national unity. He underscored the necessity for Nigeria to adopt innovation, industrialization, and technological advancements to foster sustainable growth, advocating a strategic shift from consumption to production.

Expressing concern over rural insecurity, particularly related to the uncontrolled movement of cattle, Meme pointed out the negative impacts on agricultural productivity, community displacement, and food insecurity. He called for urgent reforms in agriculture, suggesting the implementation of ranching systems, enhanced rural security measures, and better protection for farmers and farmland across the nation.
Youth Empowerment and Skills Development Initiatives

Henry Shields, Director of Mission, Leadership, and Accountability Initiatives, expressed concerns regarding Nigeria’s democracy, particularly in the context of economic hardship and political intolerance. He characterized the convention as a call for the rebirth of democracy, stressing that true democracy extends beyond mere elections to encompass justice, accountability, and genuine representation. Shields highlighted the rising costs of political participation and the exclusion of youth from governance, urging reforms to enhance internal party democracy and promote political inclusion.
