Internal Divisions Deepen Within the Peoples Democratic Party
Rifts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intensified on Thursday as a faction backed by Nyesom Wike commenced the selection of candidates for presidential, gubernatorial, and parliamentary positions for the 2027 general elections. This move underscores the escalating leadership tensions within Nigeria’s primary opposition party.
Candidate Selection Process Underway Amidst Rival Claims
The candidate selection process, overseen by the Abdulrahman Muhammad-led National Working Committee (NWC), took place at the PDP national secretariat annex located in Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja. This event unfolded against a backdrop of competing claims from various factions regarding control of the party structure.
Structured Vetting for Aspirants
According to a statement issued by Chinwe Norom, the party’s national communications director on behalf of Jundo Mohammed, the vetting of gubernatorial candidates began at noon, followed by the presidential candidates who faced the committee at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Competition Heightens Ahead of 2027 Elections
This candidate selection comes as multiple blocs within the PDP increasingly vie for dominance over the party’s structure leading up to the 2027 elections. Parallel meetings, alliances, and negotiations among various factions have become more prevalent across the nation.
Leadership of Selection Committees Established
The statement also detailed the leadership of the selection committees. Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu chairs the Presidential Selection Committee, with Mr. Hassan Sokodobo serving as secretary. Other members include former senators George Sekibo and Zainab Kule, along with various party officials. Similarly, the Governorship Selection Committee will be led by Mr. Ahmed Makarfi, with Mr. George Aliol as secretary, supported by panel members Ibrahim Umar, Aisha Madawaki, and Tajudeen Yusuf.
Aspirants Confirm Participation in Vetting Process
A number of aspirants across various states have confirmed their participation in the ongoing selection proceedings, referring to it as a significant milestone leading to the party’s primaries. Ms. Natasha Akpoti Uduagan reported completing her review of the Kogi Central senatorial election, expressing confidence in her preparedness with all necessary documentation.
Political Landscape Shifting with New Alliances
In a parallel development, the faction led by Kabir Turaki has announced an alliance with the People’s Movement Alliance, signaling increased coalition discussions among opposition parties as they gear up for the next general election. Ini Emebon, spokesperson for the Turaki faction, indicated that this alliance was inspired by resolutions reached during the All Opposition Leaders Summit convened in Ibadan, Oyo State, in April.
