Rift Deepens within Peoples Democratic Party as Allegations Surge
The ongoing turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Thursday when a faction led by Nyesom Wike lodged a formal complaint with security agencies, accusing another group associated with Tanim Turaki of impersonation.
Police Involvement in Impersonation Allegations
Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary of Wike’s faction, addressed reporters in Abuja to discuss the situation. He confirmed that following their petition, key figures from the Turaki-led group, including Board of Trustees chairman Adolphus Wabara and Tanim Turaki themselves, have been summoned by the police for questioning.
Official Response from the PDP
Anyanwu stated, “We have communicated our concerns regarding impersonation to the police and the Department of State Services (DSS). They have invited Mr. Wabara, Mr. Turaki, and others involved to present themselves at the Shehu Yar’Adua Center, where the so-called interim National Working Committee has been convened.” He emphasized the need for legal action against those responsible.
Withdrawal from Coalition Meeting Highlights Tensions
This development coincides with the Turaki faction’s withdrawal from a recent meeting aimed at forming a coalition with the Allied People’s Movement (APM). The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Jundo Mohammed, characterized this meeting as a “social gathering” devoid of any affiliation to the PDP. He clarified that the party is not engaged in any coalition or political agreement with the APM or any other political entities regarding this rally or related activities.
PDP Accuses Governor Makinde of Deception
The PDP further asserted that any individual or group claiming to represent the party in this context is doing so without its authorization. “What is being portrayed as a political alliance is merely a desperate maneuver by Governor Seyi Makinde and his affiliates to mislead the public,” the party stated, accusing him of attempting to camouflage his intentions through misleading claims.
Political Maneuvering and Allegations of Isolation
The party expressed concern over Makinde’s political maneuvers, noting that his refusal to acknowledge the reality of his growing isolation reflects a failure to strategize effectively. They claimed that the rally in Ibadan is a mere public spectacle tied to Makinde’s shift to APM, rather than a genuine political alliance.
Party Remains Committed Ahead of Upcoming Elections
Despite the turmoil, the PDP emphasized its unity and preparedness for the 2027 general elections. The organization reiterated that it is currently conducting selection exercises for gubernatorial and presidential candidates at its headquarters in Abuja, alongside recent state and national assembly selection events. The PDP assured all aspirants and stakeholders that it remains steadfast and ready to face upcoming challenges without legal or political impediments.
